West scorched by record-breaking heat wave, temperatures in the 120s

Temperatures in California, Nevada, and Arizona are forecast to hit 115, 120, and even 130 this weekend as a punishing heat wave hits the West. It's possible the record for the hottest temperature recorded on Earth may be broken this weekend.

By Brian Skoloff and Chris Carlson,?Associated Press / June 29, 2013

Construction workers gather at a new home site at sunrise to beat daytime high temperatures, Thursday, in Queen Creek, Ariz. Excessive heat warnings will continue for much of the Desert Southwest as building high pressure triggers major warming in eastern California, Nevada, and Arizona.

Dan Kail was vacationing in Las Vegas when he heard that the temperature at Death Valley could approach 130 degrees this weekend. He didn't hesitate to make a trip to the desert location that is typically the hottest place on the planet.

"Coming to Death Valley in the summertime has always been on the top of my bucket list," the 67-year-old Pittsburgh man said. "When I found out it might set a record I rented a car and drove straight over. If it goes above 130 I will have something to brag about."

The forecast called for Death Valley to reach 128 degrees Saturday as part of a?heat?wave?that has caused large parts of the western US to suffer. Death Valley's record high of 134 degrees, set a century ago, stands as the highest temperature ever recorded on Earth.

"The wind out here is like being in front of a blast furnace," Kail said.

As temperatures soared in Las Vegas Friday, 200 people were treated for?heat?problems at an outdoor concert, Clark County spokesman Erik Pappa said.

Thirty of them were hospitalized for heat-related injuries at Vans Warped Tour at Silverton Casino as temps reached 115.

Most of the others "were essentially provided shade and water and a place to sit down," Pappa said.

It was expected to get even hotter in Las Vegas over the weekend.

Phoenix reached 116 on Friday ? 2 degrees short of the expected high ? in part because a light layer of smoke from wildfires in neighboring New Mexico shielded the blazing sun, the National Weather Service said. Phoenix was forecast to hit nearly 120. The record in Phoenix is 122.

The?heat?was so punishing that rangers took up positions at trailheads at Lake Mead in Nevada to persuade people not to hike. Zookeepers in Phoenix hosed down the elephants and fed tigers frozen fish snacks. Dogs were at risk of burning their paws on scorched pavement, and airlines kept close watch on the?heat?for fear that it could cause flights to be delayed.

The?heat?wasn't expected to break until Monday or Tuesday.

The scorching weather presented problems for airlines because high temperatures can make it more difficult for planes to take off. Hot air reduces lift and also can diminish engine performance. Planes taking off in the?heat?may need longer runways or may have to shed weight by carrying less fuel or cargo.

Smaller jets and propeller planes are more likely to be affected than bigger airliners that are better equipped for extreme temperatures.

Temperatures are also expected to soar across Utah and into Wyoming and Idaho, with triple-digit?heat?forecast for the Boise area. Cities in Washington state that are better known for cool, rainy weather should break the 90s next week.

"This is the hottest time of the year, but the temperatures that we'll be looking at for Friday through Sunday, they'll be toward the top," said weather service meteorologist Mark O'Malley. "It's going to be baking hot across much of the entire West."

The?heat?is the result of a high-pressure system brought on by a shift in the jet stream, the high-altitude air current that dictates weather patterns. The jet stream has been more erratic in the past few years.

Health officials warned people to be extremely careful when venturing outdoors. The risks include not only dehydration and?heat?stroke but burns from the concrete and asphalt. Dogs can suffer burns and blisters on their paws by walking on hot pavement.

"You will see people who go out walking with their dog at noon or in the middle of the day and don't bring enough water and it gets tragic pretty quickly," said Bretta Nelson, spokeswoman for the Arizona Humane Society. "You just don't want to find out the hard way."

Cooling stations were set up to shelter the homeless and elderly people who can't afford to run their air conditioners. In Phoenix, Joe Arpaio, the famously hard-nosed sheriff who runs a tent jail, planned to distribute ice cream and cold towels to inmates this weekend.

Officials said personnel were added to the Border Patrol's search-and-rescue unit because of the danger to people trying to slip across the Mexican border. At least seven people have been found dead in the last week in Arizona after falling victim to the brutal desert?heat.

In June 1990, when Phoenix hit 122 degrees, airlines were forced to cease flights for several hours because of a lack of data from the manufacturers on how the aircraft would operate in such extreme?heat.

US Airways spokesman Todd Lehmacher said the airline now knows that its Boeings can fly at up to 126 degrees, and its Airbus fleet can operate at up to 127.

While the?heat?in Las Vegas is expected to peak Sunday, it's unlikely to sideline the first round of the four-week Bikini Invitational tournament.

"I feel sorry for those poor girls having to strut themselves in 115 degrees, but there's $100,000 up for grabs," said Hard Rock casino spokeswoman Abigail Miller. "I think the girls are willing to make the sacrifice."

Skoloff reported from Phoenix. Also contributing were Robert Jablon in Los Angeles, Julie Jacobson and Michelle Rindels in Las Vegas, Michelle Price in Salt Lake City, Cristina Silva and Bob Christie in Phoenix, and Susan Montoya Bryan in Albuquerque, N.M.

Every Secret Agent Wannabe Needs a Quadcopter Belt of Death

You could probably argue there are worse offenders, but there's no denying that James Bond's Thunderball jetpack is definitely up there in the pantheon of ridiculous 00-gadgets. Tinkerer Rodger Cleye recently tried to put a more realistic spin on the concept, and the result is this still-ridiculous-but-fully-functioning quadcopter "belt."

Your Guide to Android Gaming Consoles | DailyTekk

Gaming has come a long way since the Atari and original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). When people think of gaming, the products most likely to come to mind these days are the Sony Playstation, now in its 4th version, the Microsoft Xbox, whose latest version has been dubbed the Xbox One and the spiritual successor to the NES, the Nintendo Wii U. These ?next-gen? consoles are typically quite expensive (the Xbox One starts at $499 unsubsidized) but feature exceptional graphics.

In recent years a new gaming landscape has started to emerge built on top of the Android operating system that has brought a high-quality, fun gaming experience to the masses for a cheaper price?particularly on mobile devices. Now a new group of consoles (sometimes referred to as ?microconsoles?) aims to bring the Android gaming experience to the big screen, your TV, in order to compete for the attention and dollars of ?traditional? Playstation, Xbox and Wii audiences. While ?hardcore? gamers who love graphics and processor-rich games like the Halo franchise may never defect, parents and casual gamers who are looking for a cheaper or more casual gaming experience will find plenty to like about the new wave of Android gaming devices headed their way.

Learn About Android

Before you do anything, you should familiarize yourself with Android. Android is a free operating system made by Google. Most famous for powering devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S4, Android is flexible, open-source and Google?s answer to Apple?s iOS. In fact, Android has become so popular that the devices it powers outnumber the population of the entire planet.

Learn About Android Gaming Titles

Whereas games for ?next-gen? consoles can cost upwards of $59 for one title, games for microconsoles are usually just a few of dollars each. While you shouldn?t expect mind-blowing graphics on an Android gaming console, that doesn?t mean the games that are available aren?t any fun. Many, but not all, Android games gave a pixelly feel to them, sometimes on purpose as developers are going for a retro feel. You can expect many side-scrollers, puzzles and racing games and less first-person shooters.

Learn About Android Gaming Consoles

While there are a handful of Android-powered gaming devices planned or already in-development, this how-to article will focus on three main consoles: the Ouya, the GameStick and the GamePop. If you?re interested in looking into additional Android-based gaming systems, be sure to check out the Nvidia Shield, the Wikipad, the Woxi SmartPod, the iConsole.tv (billed as the most powerful Android device to-date) and the Amkette Evo TV. Additionally, some smart TVs now offer Android-powered gaming, though the experience is not as sleek as what you will find on dedicated gaming hardware.

Ouya: The Ouya console costs $99 new and comes with one Bluetooth wireless controller (additional controllers cost $49 each) and an HDMI cable. Every single game on the Ouya is free to try, something unique to this console. At the time of writing, there are about 130 games available. Featured games include Final Fantasy III, Vector, Knightmare Tower, Canabalt HD and BombSquad.

GameStick: The GameStick will set you back $79 brand-new and bills itself as the world?s most portable games console. The GameStick controller hides a detachable dongle that connects to your TV to connect the device to your screen. An additional controller can be purchased for multiplayer action. Featured games include Ballpoint Universe, Crazy Snowboard, Ski Safari, Shadowgun and Smash Cops.

GamePop: The GamePop takes a completely different approach to Android gaming charging users $6.99 per month and giving them access to hundreds of games (at least 500 at the time of writing). It?s a bit like Netflix for Android gaming: instead of owning, you rent the equipment and the games. The console and controller themselves would cost around $100 if you were able to buy them outright. Featured games include Talking Tom 2, Jetpack Joy Ride and Kids Shape Puzzle.

?

Conclusion

If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to a Playstation 4, an Xbox One or a Wii U, an Android console may be the perfect match. If you are looking for the best graphics and most in-depth titles, you may want to look elsewhere. The three options mentioned here are all similar in price and performance and mostly differ in availability of titles and design. The Ouya has a very colorful and ?cool? on-screen interface, for instance, while the GamePop probably takes the cake for the best looking hardware. The GameStick is the most compact of all the systems mentioned here and can easily tuck away and out-of-sight.

Microsoft tweaks Windows 8, blamed for PC slump

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Microsoft is trying to avert slumping PC sales and growing criticism of its flagship operating system with the release of a revised version of Windows 8.

On Wednesday, Microsoft made a preview version of Windows 8.1 available for download. It includes alterations meant to address consumer dissatisfaction with the operating system. Analysts believe users' frustration with Windows 8 is partly to blame for the biggest drop in personal computer sales in nearly two decades.

At a conference in San Francisco, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer acknowledged that the company pushed hard to get people to adopt a radical new tile-based "Modern" user interface in Windows 8. Microsoft is now back-pedaling, making it easier to reach and use the older "desktop" interface.

"Let's make it easier to start applications the way we're used to," Ballmer told the audience of software developers. "What we will show you today is a refined blend of our Desktop experience and our Modern experience."

Windows 8, released Oct. 26, was Microsoft's answer to changing customer behavior and the rise of tablet computers. The operating system emphasizes touch controls over the mouse and the keyboard, which had been the main way people have interacted with their personal computers since the 1980s.

Microsoft and PC makers had been looking to Windows 8 to revive sales of personal computers, but some people have been put off by the radical makeover. Research firm IDC said the operating system actually slowed down the market. Although Microsoft says it has sold more than 100 million Windows 8 licenses so far, IDC said worldwide shipments of personal computers fell 14 percent in the first three months of this year, the worst since tracking began in 1994.

Windows 8 was also supposed to make Microsoft more competitive in the growing market for tablet computers. But Windows tablets had less than a 4 percent market share in the first quarter, compared with 57 percent for Android and 40 percent for Apple's iPad.

Among the changes present in Windows 8.1, users will be able to boot up in Desktop mode. There, they'll find a button that resembles the old Start button. It won't take users to the old Start menu, but to the new "Modern" Windows 8 start screen. Still, the re-introduction of the familiar button may make it easier for longtime Windows users to get accustomed to the changes. A common complaint about Windows 8 is that it hides features and functions, and replaces buttons with gestures and invisible click zones that have to be memorized.

Other new features of Windows 8.1 include more options to use multiple apps. People will be able to determine how much of the screen each app takes while showing up to four different programs, rather than just two. The update will also offer more integrated search results, showing users previews of websites, apps and documents that are on the device, all at once.

Microsoft also touted a broadening array of applications specifically written for Windows 8, among them one from Facebook.

Frank Gillett, an analyst with research firm Forrester, said that with 8.1, Microsoft is doing a better job of uniting the Desktop and Modern screens, but the changes don't run deep.

"They smoothed off some rough edges, but they don't fundamentally change the experience of having two experiences within one operating system," he said.

The preview version of Windows 8.1 is meant for Microsoft's partners and other technology developers, but anyone can download it. The release comes exactly eight months after desktops, laptops and tablets with Windows 8 went on sale. The version of the Windows 8.1 update meant for the general public will come later in the year, though the company hasn't announced a specific date.

Julie Larson-Green, the head of Microsoft's Windows division, said the update, rapid by Microsoft standards, "shows how much more responsive our engineering has become."

Many of the new features have been shown already. A three-day Build conference, which started Wednesday in San Francisco, gives Microsoft developers a chance to learn more about the new system and try it out. It also will give the company a chance to explain some of the reasoning behind the update and sell developers on Microsoft's ambitions to regain relevance lost to Apple's iPad and various devices running Google's Android software.

One big problem is the fact that Windows 8 doesn't work well on smaller screens, making Windows tablets less competitive with cheaper tablets such as Apple's iPad Mini, Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire HD. Microsoft built Windows 8 primarily to run on tablets with 10-inch to 12-inch screens, and it is trying to address that shortcoming in Windows 8.1.

It's crucial that Microsoft sets things right with Windows 8.1 because the outlook for the PC market keeps getting gloomier. IDC now expects PC shipments to fall by nearly 8 percent this year, worse than its previous forecast of a 1 percent dip. IDC also anticipates tablets will outsell laptop computers for the first time this year.

Microsoft is addressing that shift by banking its future on touch controls. Its strategy calls for having just one operating system work on both tablets and traditional computers. That allows popular Windows programs such as Office to work well on tablets, too. But in making Windows easy for touch screens, mouse and keyboard commands are more complex to use and figure out.

Apple and Google, on the other hand, believe people use those machines differently and have opted to keep their operating systems separate. Apple, for instance, believes that it can be tiresome to have to constantly move your arm to touch a desktop or laptop screen. That's not a problem with tablets because you're already holding it.

As for the growing interest in smaller, cheaper tablets, Microsoft has said the company is working with other manufacturers to make some. At the conference, it didn't confirm reports that it is making its own.

Microsoft also said very little about Windows RT, the Windows 8 variant that's designed to run on the same phone-style processors that let the iPad and Android tablets be lighter and have longer battery lives than Windows 8 tablets with PC-style Intel processors. Windows RT has been hamstrung by a lack of applications, since it won't run older Windows programs.

At the conference, Microsoft showed off an Acer tablet with an 8-inch screen ? a size that would be a good fit for an RT device ? but it ran full-blown Windows 8 instead.

Microsoft Corp. just cut the effective price of its Surface tablet with Windows RT by including a keyboard cover for free. The cover sells for $120 or $130 on its own.

Microsoft also said this month that it would give buyers of the RT version of Surface the Outlook email and calendar program at no extra charge ? joining other Office freebies Excel, Word and Power Point ? and sweetening the offer for the device that is priced starting at $499. The new programs will come as part of the Windows 8.1 update.

Verizon 4G LTE reaches 500th market, initial network build-out now complete

Verizon 4G LTE reaches 500th market, initial network buildout now complete

Verizon was the first US carrier to launch (and famously fumble) its LTE rollout back in 2011, but its long road to 4G nationwide coverage has finally come to a near close. As of today, the operator's LTE footprint now blankets more than 298 million people in 500 markets across the US, with Parkersburg, West Virginia claiming that 500th market distinction. It's a milestone Verizon managed to achieve in a little over two years' time, as the company's Chief Network Officer Nicola Palmer was quick to point out. The completion of this initial LTE rollout also brings Alaska into Verizon's coverage map as early as next month -- a territory that, before today, didn't even have 3G -- marking the carrier's network as available in all 50 states.

With a full LTE expansion, however, comes network congestion problems, as subscribers in major cities like New York are already starting to experience. Palmer assured us that solutions are currently underway to shore up capacity in these LTE markets. Verizon's AWS holdings, in particular, should serve to augment LTE reception in select areas starting in the second half of this year. The same goes for small cell site deployment, which Palmer stressed is an LTE-only initiative. News on the carrier's plans for LTE-Advanced remain just as vague as ever, with Palmer positioning the standard as yet another tool to enhance current LTE capacity. Unfortunately, she wouldn't commit to a timeframe for LTE-A nor address concerns about the potential for new pricing tiers when it does eventually launch. Still, Verizon subs will at least have VoLTE (voice over LTE) to look forward to next year -- that is, when it eventually clears the company's rigorous lab and field testing.

Calgary Humane Society deals with rush of animals ... - Metro News

Staff at the Calgary Humane Society are asking people to hold off on animal surrenders as they care for the pets of dozens of owners displaced by flooding in the city.

Spokesperson Christy Thompson said the 615 furry residents at the organization?s shelter presently puts it near ? or at ? capacity.

?We are trying to manage the space we have right now,? she said. ?We are community-driven, we are looking at community need right now and the need for us is to be emergency boarding.?

Even this week, Thompson said flood victims have continued to drop their pets at the shelter as they are given uncertain timelines on when they can return home.

She said staff hope the capacity issue doesn?t last for long.

?We?re hoping within a week we?ll have a really good idea of where we stand,? Thompson said.

The society is offering up support packs for flood victims who continue to care for their pets that include blankets, food and other essential items.

Mad Catz M.O.U.S. 9

  • Pros

    Flexible design. Comfortable.

  • Cons Expensive. Sensor isn't quite as gaming-oriented as other Mad Catz mice.
  • Bottom Line

The Mad Catz M.O.U.S. 9 looks and feels like a flexible, albeit pricey, wireless gaming mouse, even if Mad Catz tries to promote it as a mouse for non-gamers.

By Will Greenwald

Mad Catz made a very strange choice when it made the M.O.U.S. 9 wireless mouse. It pitched the mouse as a powerful, everyday, non-gaming mouse. Despite its name being M.O.U.S. 9, its design coming from Mad Catz' R.A.T. gaming mice series, and its $129.99 (direct) price and wireless-mouse-with-nano-dongle-and-carrying-pouch status matching the company's R.A.T. M gaming mouse. Indeed, if you were to compare the two mice at a glance, you'd be hard pressed to see the difference. The M.O.U.S. 9 is more focused on its software-powered productivity features and Mad Catz is hesitant to describe its specific sensitivity compared to the R.A.T. M (but the M.O.U.S. 9 does use a laser sensor that can function on glass and most other surfaces), but as a gaming mouse it fares very well. More importantly, it's simply more comfortable than the R.A.T. M, with a larger design you won't notice packed in your bag but you will notice under your hand. The mouse is available in red, white, and matte and glossy black versions, and while Mad Catz doesn't promote it as a gaming mouse, it gets the job done very well.

Design
The M.O.U.S. 9 is a full-sized Mad Catz mouse, dwarfing the company's similarly equipped R.A.T. M mouse by a few comfortable fractions of an inch. Its palm rest can extend by pressing a button under it, letting you adjust the mouse to fit the size of your hand. It also locks in to place once you stop pressing the button, making it much more secure than the R.A.T. M's palm rest. It's very angular and tech-themed, like other Mad Catz R.A.T. mice, with stark, geometric edges interrupting the smooth mouse's lines. Besides the two main buttons and the mouse wheel, the M.O.U.S. 9 has an additional button to the left of the index finger, a large thumb button and two smaller forward/backward buttons on the thumb rest, a thumb wheel below the left mouse button, and a sensitivity toggle below the mouse wheel. All of these buttons can be configured and programmed with Mad Catz's free PC and Mac software.

The underside of the mouse holds the laser sensor next to a small power switch. A small USB receiver sits in a spring-loaded hole when not in use, and since it's a GameSmart Bluetooth mouse it can be used by any computer or tablet that can accept a Bluetooth pointing device without the adapter. A cylinder under the palm rest hides a compartment for one AA battery, which Mad Catz claims can run the M.O.U.S. 9 for a year. The mouse can fit in a drawstring bag that comes included, giving it extra protection if you toss it in your bag.

Comfort
I found the M.O.U.S. 9 comfortable to use even under my large hand, which felt cramped when using the R.A.T.M. While it lacks the four-way hat switch under the thumb found on the R.A.T.M, the larger thumb button and the thumb wheel are more functional and feel more solid; the hat switch felt slightly fiddle, and it was hard to use it in a given direction instead of pushing it straight down.

While both of Mad Catz's wireless mobile gaming mice offerings are a tad on the expensive side, the M.O.U.S. 9 stands as the superior model, with a larger, more functional design and a palm rest that locks into place. $130 is a lot to pay for a wireless mouse with no cradle, cable, or rechargeable battery, but it performs very well and works as a very convenient package for mice on the go. If you want a full-featured gaming mouse for your notebook and don't want to carry around a sack of cables and accessories, the Mad Catz M.O.U.S. 9 is an excellent choice. If you don't mind a cable, the Logitech G700s is a great, rechargeable wireless gaming mouse available for $30 less and our Editors' Choice for gaming mice.

Saints Row IV banned in Australia due to 'unjustified' evil

For every tearful accountant at Saints Row HQ, there must be a gleeful marketing person punching the air, playing mini golf and doing whatever else marketing people do when they're full of glee. Conflicted emotions aside, however, game publisher Deep Silver can now claim the notorious distinction of having its latest title, Saints Row IV, rejected outright by the Australian Classification Board (ACB). It's the first such refusal since the ACB implemented a new R18+ rating, which is meant to allow for adult themes within games but which evidently couldn't cope with Saints Row's peculiar depictions of sexual violence (which were "not justified by context") or its drug-themed reward system (which is "prohibited by the computer games guidelines"). According to The Guardian, this effectively means Saints Row IV is banned from sale in retail stores in Australia, but Joystiq has received word from Deep Silver saying it intends to create a "reworked" version of its open-world game specifically for that country. Meanwhile, the regular version has been given PEGI 18 and ESRB M ratings elsewhere, and it looks to be on track for an August release date.
