Labor Secretary-designate Thomas Perez spent most of his time before a Senate confirmation committee testifying about his current job as head of the Justice Department?s Civil Rights Division.
Pressed repeatedly on April 18 by Republican members of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), Perez defended his leadership and tried to steer the conversation back to issues the Department of Labor deals with. ?
When he wasn?t addressing Justice Department lawsuits concerning the Fair Housing Act, immigration enforcement and voter intimidation, Perez said his top priority at the Department of Labor would be ?jobs, jobs and jobs.? He pledged to seek reauthorization of the Workforce Investment Act, which funnels federal funding to job training programs, and continue rigorous enforcement of workplace safety and wage-and-hour laws.
The HELP committee scheduled a May 8 vote on Perez?s nomination.
