Old school and hardcore fans were intrigued by the news recently that PRIDE veteran Tatsuya Kawajiri is headed to the UFC, as it wasn’t too long ago when the Japanese fighter was widely regarded to be one of the planet’s top lightweights. After suffering a one sided loss to Gilbert Melendez under the Strikeforce banner in 2011, Kawajiri has rebounded as a featherweight and has won five straight.
While it remains to be seen who Kawajiri will fight in his Octagon debut, it looks like the vet has some ideas, and it’s one of the UFC’s best 145′ers. The 35 year-old fighter was asked who he wants to fight next via Twitter, and Kawajiri responded:
I want to fight with @CubSwanson. He won the hiroyuki takaya in WEC. Takaya is my friend.
Kawajiri proceeded to retweet other reports regarding his wish to throw down with Swanson, and also noted later:
That’s right. A weak fighter is not in UFC. I came to UFC, in order to fight with a strong fighter.
So, that would be intriguing fight and a great opportunity for Kawajiri in his UFC debut, but will it happen? Considering Swanson has won five straight fights and is currently ranked #4 in the division, his camp might want to see him fight a top ranked contender next. Then again, Kawajiri does have a big name throughout the industry…
