A Dream Team for Prostate Cancer | My New York Minute

02. Apr, 2012

A powerful alliance awards a $10 Million, three-year grant to fund collaborative research for developing personalized treatments for advanced prostate cancer.

At yesterday?s AACR meeting in Chicago, the Prostate Cancer Foundation and Stand Up to Cancer announced their first ever research Dream Team for prostate cancer, in association with the AACR.

The three-year program will draw upon the expertise of prostate cancer research experts from five leading cancer centers. Led by PCF- funded scientists Dr. Arul Chinnaiyan at the University of Michigan and Dr. Charles Sawyers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, the five-center team will address resistance pathways for hormone refractory prostate cancer with special emphasis on metastatic disease, and deliver near-term patient benefit through investigation by a multidisciplinary, multi-institutional, synergistic Dream Team of expert investigators.

According to Dr. Sawyers, ?this is the tipping point for prostate cancer,? referring to the Dream Team. Others on the team underscored that advanced prostate cancer will be a model for precision medicine in modeling all tumor types.

At a time when government funding for cancer research stands on precarious footing, more than ever we need more pooled resources and greater collaboration. Here?s to the first Prostate Cancer Dream Team and to more to come!
