Iyanla Vanzant on Women Friends... And Why They Can't Get Along (VIDEO)

  • Hilary Duff vs. Lindsay Lohan

Take two Disney starlets and one prepubescent popstar and you have a recipe for one of the most discussed celebrity feuds of the 2000s. Back in 2002, Aaron Carter reportedly broke up with or cheated on Hilary Duff, who he was dating for two years, to hook up with Lindsay Lohan. The 15-year-old Casanova then left Lohan to get back together with Duff. Though the girls should have been furious with Carter, they instead turned on each other. Their feud played out in the pages of magazines with both actresses <a href="http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/8669450/ns/today-entertainment/t/lohan-says-duff-rebuffed-her-peace-attempt/" target="_hplink">taking shots at each other for years. </a> By 2007 the girls put their past behind them and made up. "We are both adults and whatever happened, happened when we were young," Duff <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20033534,00.html" target="_hplink">told <em>People</em></a>. "It's over."

  • Miley vs. Selena Gomez & Demi Lovato

Disney starlets do not play nice. In 2008, teen queen Miley Cyrus went head to head with Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato. BFFs Selena and Demi used to make goofy videos they would post to YouTube, much to the chagrin of Miley as it turned out. Miley and her BFF Mandy made a parody video where they mocked the other girls, making fun of their makeup and the gap in Demi's front teeth. The feud appeared to come out of nowhere. "To be honest I don't know what happened," <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2008/08/01/the-miley-cyrus-selena-gomez-demi-lovato-feud-nonexistent/" target="_hplink">Selena told MTV</a>. "I though we were okay, but to be honest, I don't even know [Miley and Mandy]. And Demi has never met Miley. It's interesting -- that's all I'm going to say about it." They all eventually made up and became friends. <a href="http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00021443.html" target="_hplink">Miley addressed the feud in a YouTube video in 2009: </a> "So everyone's thinking there's a big feud between me and Selena and Demi. Actually, I'm going to have meatloaf with Demi tonight. I'm riding my bike to Demi's house. So I'm going to be partying with Demi 'cause we're friends, and I love her and she is always there for me. She is one of my bestest friends."

  • Kelly Osbourne vs. Christina Aguilera

These ladies need to learn to keep their comments to themselves. Back in the day, Christina Aguilera apparently used to call Kelly Osbourne fat, and now that Kelly has slimmed down and Christina has gained a few pounds the tables have turned. Osbourne made sure to call attention to the singer's weight gain, not once, but twice in 2011. "Maybe she is just becoming the fat bitch she was born to be. I don't know. She was a c**t to me. And she bought my house," Osbourne said <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/04/kelly-osbourne-calls-christina-aguilera-a-fat-bitch_n_918063.html" target="_hplink">during an episode of "Fashion Police" that aired in August.</a> "She called me fat for so many f***ing years, so you know what? F**k you! You're fat too." Then in October, the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/17/kelly-osbourne-i-was-never-as-fat-as-christina-aguilera_n_1015490.html" target="_hplink">singer was again the topic of discussion on the show: </a> "Lady Marmalade got into the peanut better again," quipped co-host Joan Rivers when criticizing Aguilera's too-tight outfit. "She called me fat for years, I was never that fat," Osbourne said and later added, "Trust me, I'm a 2/4. That is not a 2/4."

  • Shannen Doherty vs. Alyssa Milano

Shannen Doherty has a reputation as Hollywood's bad girl and feuded with nearly all of her "Beverly Hills, 90210" castmates, and yet it was her feud with Alyssa Milano that will go down as the worst. The "Charmed" co-stars began fighting on set during the third season and it was reported that Shannen was jealous of Alyssa's popularity. Tension ran high on set and things grew so heated, producers had to bring in a mediator to resolve their issues. When they couldn't work things out, Shannen left the show.

  • Lauren Conrad vs. Heidi and Spencer

"You know what you did," Lauren Conrad screamed at Heidi Montag on an episode of "The Hills." Lauren and Heidi's friendship began to dissolve in 2007, when Heidi started dating Spencer Pratt. "He's a sucky person," she infamously told her one-time best friend. Heidi chose a relationship with Spencer over a friendship with Lauren and spread a rumor there was a<a href="http://www.justjared.com/2008/05/01/heidi-montag-lauren-conrad-feud/" target="_hplink"> Lauren Conrad sex tape floating around. </a> Heidi tried to repair things with Lauren, but she wasn't having it. "I want to forgive you and I want to forget you," Lauren told her as <a href="http://www.sheknows.com/living/march-madness-mix-up-gallery/cry-faces/lauren-conrad-3" target="_hplink">mascara ran down her face</a>. The feud eventually ended but they never repaired their friendship. As Spencer began to fade into obscurity he tried make himself relevant by burying the hatchet with Conrad, <a href="http://tv.yahoo.com/news/lauren-conrad-planning-ignore-spencer-pratts-apology-000504559.html" target="_hplink">wishing her a happy birthday</a> on Twitter in February 2012.

  • LeAnn Rimes vs. Giuliana Rancic

LeAnn Rimes is skinny -- so skinny that she has people worrying that she's not eating. The equally skinny Giuliana Rancic was one those people. Pot, meet kettle. The two skinny ladies battled it out <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/30/leann-rimes-responds-giuliana-rancic_n_941579.html" target="_hplink">telling each other to eat a sandwich. </a>

  • Ciara vs. Rihanna

Rihanna and Ciara -- who both dated Chris Brown in the past -- got into a heated public spat in February 2011. First Ciara made a dig at Rihanna on "Fashion Police," saying: "I ran into her recently at a party. She wasn't the nicest. It's crazy because I've always loved and respected what she's done in fashion. It wasn't the most pleasant run-in." When Rihanna heard what Ciara had said, she fired back on Twitter. "My bad Ci, did I forget to tip you? How rude of me.... You gangsta huh? Ha." They volleyed insults and threats at each other and then Rihanna called a truce. "Ciara baby, I love you girl! You hurt my feelings real bad on TV! I'm heartbroken! That's why I retaliated this way! So sorry! Let's make up." Ciara accepted the apology and that was that.

  • Kourtney Kardashian vs. Farrah Abraham

This might be one of the most ridiculous celebrity fights of all time. "Teen Mom" cast member Farrah Abraham didn't think things through when she criticized Kourtney Kardashian on Twitter. "I'm shocked Kourtney Kardashian is pregnant again Did she not learn anything from TEEN MOM? Maybe its a fake pregnancy like kims wedding SAD," she tweeted. Kourtney was understandably confused by the attack and tweeted back, "Why would I have anything to do with Teen Mom? I'm 32 years old! I may look young, honey, but don't get it twisted." While Kourtney suggested that Farrah had no idea what she was talking about, the "Teen Mom" star couldn't resist firing back at her: "Guess what! Age and money honestly do not change a person's poor choice. Quit making excuses," she tweeted. Kourtney's boyfriend Scott Disick also got in on the fight, sarcastically tweeting at Farrah, "We're not teenagers, ya f**king moron." When asked if he knew who she was, he responded, ""I just thought she was some shit stain on Twitter, no?" Sadly, this Twitter fight actually continued with Farrah later tweeting, "4 all who mistunderstood: regards to kourtney K.~I hope she takes her relationship w/her boyfriend more serious 4 their children-takecare." Shortly after, however, she couldn't resist getting one more word in with a jab at Disick: "Caught wind of these dramatic articles, w/ loser scott disick or some boyfriend of kourtneys, is Shit Stain < racist 4 black?" she wrote. "Great dad! NOT."

  • Chelsea Handler vs. Michelle "Bombshell" McGee

Chelsea Handler <a href="http://blog.zap2it.com/pop2it/2010/04/chelsea-handler-goes-after-michelle-bombshell-mcgee-some-more.html" target="_hplink">started a feud with Jesse James' tattooed mistress Michelle "Bombshell" McGee in 2010,</a> with a joke she wrote on her blog: "I guess she doesn't read magazines which makes sense, since she basically has one on her face." McGee responded on her Facebook page writing: "Chelsea, here's some free advice: Use some of that Botox from your forehead and put it in your flabby underarm skin. I've seen better wings in a bucket of KFC chicken." And later wrote, ""In all seriousness, Im a big fan of 'Chelsea Lately' ... I was laughing my ass off.... feel so honored to have a transexual [sic] poke fun of me ..." Don't mess with a comedian -- Handler didn't hold back with her response to McGee: "First of all, look at my forehead, you dumb bitch, okay? It moves ... You have a tattoo on your forehead, so you have had a needle in your forehead -- and probably Jesse James' balls. So shut your face."

    18 hrs.

During the election, President Barack?Obama crashed servers when he appeared in an impromptu "Ask Me Anything" post on Reddit.?Rep. Darrell Issa, a Republican from California,?decided to do the same ? "Together, we can make Washington take a break from messing w/ the Internet" his post said in part. But?the response wasn't quite as positive as he might have hoped.

Issa's post, seeking?discussion of a two-year ban on legislation that would affect the Internet, was submitted to?the popular social news site?Tuesday evening. Shortly afterwards, it reached the front page and questions started rolling in. By Wednesday morning,?the time Issa had set for answering questions, the queries?had turned into something of a dogpile.

By far the most popular question the one?posed by user The_Milkman: "Hey Darrell, why did you vote for CISPA?"?Indeed, Issa's sponsorship of CISPA???the controversial?Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act that was approved by the House, but has yet to be approved or vetoed by the president ????was the topic of many questions and much ire.

Issa's?attachment to the controversial piece of legislation?? which would expand?government agencies' ability to access data from sites like Facebook and Twitter???seemed to poison his attempt to solicit Reddit's help?from the start.

Regardless of the unfriendly atmosphere, Issa answered dozens of questions, including some openly hostile ones (his post record can be found here). And like the president, he included a picture of himself answering questions for authenticity's sake. Both the grilling Issa received and his responses could easily be considered more thorough than the president's, who answered questions some?commentators?characterized as softballs.

But regardless of the tone of the conversation, the goal of procuring constructive input on the proposed legislation (the "Internet American Moratorium Act" or IAMA)?seems to have been achieved. A number of comments and suggested changes have been submitted at the site set up for this purpose, and various issues have been raised in the comment threads that may help improve the bill. And the high positive vote count on the AMA itself indicates that the community is at least interested in discussing the topic.

There's a lesson to be learned for politicians and other?public figures who are considering this kind of open discussion on a site like Reddit: It's not always going to be a love-in, as it was with the president. You may end up like Issa, with a front-page post and 2,500 comments calling you everything from an opportunistic hypocrite to a crony of big business.

County DSS: We need more foster families | Denver Weekly | News ...

    by Tori Hamby

Fifteen children have been placed into the temporary or permanent custody of Denver couple Kim and Ted Palmer.

Not counting their two biological children, a 14- and a 16-year-old, they have adopted one child, found adoptive families for two foster children currently in their custody and helped reunite children with parents who needed help getting back on their feet.

The Palmers are one of Lincoln County?s 17 foster families, although three are only licensed to take care of relatives, such as grandchildren, nieces or nephews. Six of the county?s foster families live in the Denver area.

?To see children go from hurting and feeling sad to being able to laugh again is amazing,? Kim Palmer said.

Out of the 71 Lincoln County children in foster care, 16 live with families within the county as of Oct. 31, said Sandy Kennedy, foster care and adoption program manager for the Lincoln County Department of Social Services.

Being forced to move away from home, she said, creates even more disruptions after a child is removed from their family. This means the department needs more local families to meet the county?s needs. Ideally, Kennedy said, the county needs about eight more foster families to bring its total up to 25.

?Our goal is to keep those children stable,? she said. ?They don?t need to lose school teachers or neighborhood friends or that one nurse or doctor they have a special bond with.?

When choosing a foster family for a child, Kennedy said, DSS staff members look at factors such as the number of children living in a home and their ages. Some children might need a stay-at-home parent or two parents living in the home.

Prospective foster families go through an extensive vetting process that includes a 30-hour mandatory training class, home inspections, interviews with licensing workers and criminal background and reference checks.

There are challenges that prospective foster families need to be aware of before pursuing the application process, Palmer said. Her teenage kids, for example, have had to share their rooms and their parents.

?My 16-year-old shares a room with a 7-year-old and my 14-year-old has shared a room with an infant,? she said. ?They?ve had to sacrifice, but they share the same heart that we do when it comes to opening our home.?

Foster parents can also become attached to the children in their care, she said, creating feelings of sadness and anxiety when it?s time for them to go live with their permanent families.

?The question we get asked 99.9 percent of the time is ?How can you watch a child leave after you?ve become attached??? Palmer said. ?But you have to remember that its not about you, its about the children.?

Once a child is placed in a foster home, county social service and court workers try to come up with a plan to place a child with a permanent family within one to two years, Kennedy said. That could mean the child might return to its birth family or the county finds an adoptive family.

?Our overarching goal is to achieve permanence,? Kennedy said.

Kim Palmer said one of the most rewarding aspects of foster parenting is watching a family reunite. In one case, she said, she and her husband fostered the children of two teenage parents.

In addition to providing a safe and secure environment for the kids, the Palmers helped mentor the young couple and taught them the ins and outs of parenthood.

?To watch a family be reunited is the greatest reward you will ever get,? Kim Palmer said. ?We got to hand their children back to them and say, ?Hey, you?re going to do a great job.??

In the case of the two foster children living in the Palmer home ? a 7- and 10-year-old ? they will soon be adopted by family friends of the Palmers.

Nine Lincoln County children have either been adopted by their foster families or outside families so far this year, Kennedy said.

?We just try to make them feel as secure as possible so they can begin to trust people again,? Kim Palmer said. ?Trust is the key.?

    By the numbers

? 17 ? Number of approved foster families in Lincoln County

? 6? ? Number of approved foster families in Denver

? 25 ? Number of families that Lincoln County DSS hopes will volunteer themselves as approved foster families

? 71 ? Number of Lincoln County children currently living with foster families

Spain's rescued banks to shrink, slash jobs

BRUSSELS/MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's four nationalized banks will more than halve their balance sheets in five years, slash jobs and impose hefty losses on bondholders, under plans approved by the European Commission on Wednesday.

The measures open the door for nearly 40 billion euros ($52 billion)in euro zone bail-out funds for the state-rescued banks, offering hope for an end to Spain's banking crisis which has pushed the country to the brink of asking for sovereign aid.

The approval sets in place one of the most far-reaching over-hauls of any European banking system ordered by the Commission since the start of a banking crisis in mid-2007 with the near collapse of German lender IKB.

"Our objective is to restore the viability of banks receiving aid so that they are able to function without public support in the future," said European Union Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said.

Bankia, NCG Banco, Catalunya Banc and Banco de Valencia were taken over by the Spanish state after unsustainable lending during the country's decade-long property boom left the lenders dangerously short of capital.

The smallest of the four banks, Banco de Valencia, will be sold to one of Spain's healthiest lenders Caixabank, while the other three banks must cut their balance sheets by more than 60 percent over the next five years.

    JOB LOSSES

It was cheaper to sell Banco de Valencia under a loss protection scheme than to wind it down, the Commission said. Spain will sell NCG Banco and Catalunya Banc within 5 years or liquidate them.

Almunia said the nationalized banks would have to close up to half their branches during the five-year overhaul process.

The biggest of the banks, Bankia, said it would lay off over a quarter of its workforce amounting to over 6,000 staff, reduce its branch network by around 39 percent and aim to return to profitability by 2013.

Bankia, formed from the merger of seven savings banks in 2010, said holders of hybrid debt would contribute up to 4.8 billion euros to the recapitalization, through losses incurred by swapping their holdings for shares.

The European Commission said the cost to hybrid and subordinated bondholders in the restructuring of the nationalized banks will come to about 10 billion euros.

Many hybrid debt holders at the nationalized banks are retail customers who say they were conned into buying complex financial instruments that buoyed banks' capital levels instead of fixed-term savings accounts.

The Commission said it would ensure the banks use no more taxpayers' money than necessary and that they do not go back to unsustainable business practices.

The Commissioner said he would decide on other Spanish banks with capital shortfalls on December 20.

The approval allows the euro zone to disburse the funds from its permanent ESM bailout fund. Spain was given approval to receive up to 100 billion euros from the ESM in the summer.

Device harvests energy from train tracks

    1 hr.

There are more than 140,000 miles of train track in the U.S., many of them laid across lonely stretches of land with nary a power line in sight. Thankfully, there?s a new gadget to harvest energy from vibrations generated in the track by passing trains to power signal lights and other track-side devices.

The energy harvester could save more than $10 million in trackside power costs in New York state alone, according to its inventor, Stony Brook University professor of mechanical engineering Lei Zuo. It would also reduce carbon dioxide emissions there by about 3,000 tons, he added.

The device converts the irregular up-and-down vibration of a train track to a unidirectional rotation of a generator. The concept is similar to other energy-harvesting devices such as the energy-generating backpack, kneebrace, speed bump?and pavers.?

The global market for energy harvesters hit $700 million in 2011 and could pass $4 billion by 2021, according to market research firm IDTechEx. Zuo and colleagues have licensed their Mechanical Motion Rectifier-based Railroad Energy Harvester to Electric Truck/Harvest NRG for commercialization.

NWAS Abroad: Detailing Day at Matrix Integrated | Northwest Auto ...

Ever since we expanded into our new space in Lynnwood we?ve become quite comfortable with our little corner of automotive nirvana. Despite being a bit farther out from Seattle proper than some clients may like, the workflow has been consistent, busy, and booked out. So booked out, in fact, that we?ve been getting requests from interested parties outside of Washington & even the US that want to experience the full NWAS treatment. We?re not a franchise, and by most industry standards we?re still a very small shop, so requests to work abroad whether they?re in Oregon or Dubai, are handled with the utmost care!

For our most recent Detailing Day abroad, proximity was priority. After lining up a variety of automobiles and the most intensive?automotive reconditioning ever thought physically possible for one incredible day only, we designated Matrix Integrated as our rally point bravo and got to packing supplies in the van.

Just ahead of us was 3 hours of driving and nearly 200 miles to cover in what turned out to be one of the hottest days on record history.

    Good thing we brought fans.

Matrix Integrated is an easy spot to miss if you?re not sure what you?re looking for. It sits unassumingly tucked away right off SW Macadam Ave., looking like any standard old warehouse,?lending a low profile to the German powerhouses that hide right behind the big bay doors.

Given their Bavarian specialties, Matrix Integrated was the perfect locale for what turned out to be a primarily German detail day. The stacked roster had us washing, waxing, vacuuming and wiping down a handful of Audi A3s, an A6, a beautiful Suzuka Grey R8, a VW Jetta, and a couple prized Porsches (including one from the Matrix Integrated stable, rounding out 8 vehicles in total.) Each vehicle scheduled was receiving a service similar to the one that preceded it (mostly Enthusiast Details with a few twists thrown in); so with our buckets soaped and rotaries whirring away we began a seemingly endless assembly line of detailing. To give our readers a better idea of the full experience, we produced a montage for your viewing pleasure ? check it out!

First up for the day was a tastefully customized Audi A3 sporting a number of carbon fiber goodies, aftermarket wheels, and a killer set of red Recaro racing buckets.

The car pushing up the most factory power for the day had to be the Suzuka Grey ?VEETEN? Audi R8. As you can see, Blake took his time finishing out the R8 making sure no spot was left untouched!

The size of Matrix Integrated is beyond deceiving. While it does seem to just be a rather large warehouse from the street, the interior houses a seemingly endless garage containing many an auto, from project cars to track beasts, and restorations in progress.

Turbos, Cabrios, Coraddos and even one lonely BMW SUV sat tucked back in the far corners of the warehouse just begging to have their legs stretched.

Alana Stewart on cancer foundation and ?amazing? daughter Kimberly Stewart

Contributed by Celebrity Baby Scoop (CBS)

CBS: Tell us about creating The Farrah Fawcett Foundation (FFF) that started during Farrah's battle with cancer. Do you think Farrah would be honored and proud of the foundation?

Alana Stewart (AS): "Farrah created the foundation 2 years before her death. She wanted to further research in cutting edge and alternative treatments for cancer as well as promote awareness, early detection and prevention.

She also wanted to help people suffering from cancer today. My goal as president is to uphold Farrah's wishes and keep her memory and legacy alive. I think she would be proud of the foundation's commitment to her vision and in the work we've done over the past several years."

CBS: What are some of your favorite memories of Farrah and your friendship together?

AS: "I have so many wonderful memories of the 30 years we were friends ? family get-togethers at Thanksgiving and Christmas over the years, girlfriend-time at the beach, getting our nails done and reading fashion magazines?? the many hours we spent on the phone talking about our lives, our children, everything imaginable.

We took a number of trips together and I particularly remember the last one to Texas to see her dad in Houston and then we went on to Nacogdoches to see my uncle. She was in the middle of her cancer treatment but was feeling better and we were like two girlfriends driving across Texas, stopping for barbeque and Texas fried chicken. No matter what, we always found something to laugh about. Even in the toughest times during her battle with cancer, she still maintained her spirit and sense of humor."

CBS: Congratulations on your granddaughter Delilah! How is she doing? What is she into?

AS: "I just spent most of the weekend with Kimberly, my daughter, helping her with Delilah. She's been a full-time mother 24/7 and by the weekend she really needs Nana (that would be me) to give her a break now and then.

Delilah is 14 months now and a barrel of energy. She's just adorable and quite a little character. She's very strong-willed, stubborn and doesn't like to take no for an answer. I guess you could say it runs in the family."

CBS: When you first heard of Kimberly's pregnancy, how did you react? Do you think motherhood has been transformative for her?

AS: "I was, of course, surprised when she told me, but totally supportive. She's an amazing mother. As I said, she's hands-on 24/7. I have great respect for her."

CBS: Kimberly seems to be loving motherhood. How is she adjusting to being a single mom? Is Benicio del Toro around to help?

AS: "Benicio adores Delilah and he and Kim make all the major decisions about her together. Although being an actor, he's away working a lot, he really makes an effort to be around as much as possible."

Do You Have a Gifted Child? | MomsGetReal

momsgetreal giftedkids Do You Have a Gifted Child? It starts simply enough: your child seems to catch on to things quickly.? People are often surprised to learn how young he is because of how well he talks, or that he can recite the alphabet at an extraordinarily young age.? Over time, these little incidents may start seeming more significant, especially when compared to peers of the same age.? Recognizing a gifted child often takes time, but typically, before a child is school age, parents will have a good idea of a child?s giftedness. Signs of a gifted learner include:

    • Consistently meeting development milestones early
    • Learning to read at a young age
    • Having the ability to understand more complex ideas

To recognize a gifted child, several other indicators are usually present.? Does your child ask more in-depth questions?? When other children are asking to have a snack, does your child want to know how it is made?? Does your child seem to see and understand the patterns in things, whether it is music, math, or language?? Does he or she learn without being taught and demonstrate new knowledge to you on a regular basis?? Does he or she seem unusually starved for information or obsessive about learning everything about a specific topic?

When you have a gifted child, it is a blessing and a challenge.? All children need love and attention to succeed, but often, gifted children require more attention and intervention than those who have learning disabilities, because while they might be capable of reading chapter books and doing algebra, they also concern themselves with the world on a grander scale.? Your five-year old gifted child may worry about death or world peace or the environment.

Gifted children often have difficulties fitting in with their peers at school.? Extra time may have to be taken to help them socialize and adjust.? In addition, a child can be gifted in one area and struggle in another, or be gifted academically but struggle with motor and spatial skills.? It is important to make no assumptions about your child but to treat him or her as an individual.? Address your child?s needs without assuming that because of the giftedness, he or she can figure things out on their own.? If anything, these children need your support and need to be encouraged to still be kids.

Your gifted child may be obsessed about learning, but don?t forget to encourage physical development and social development as well.? Encourage your child to play and be a kid.? Even the best young minds need to climb, skip, hop, jump rope, laugh, and play.

The most important thing to remember is that all of our kids are gifts regardless of their academic ability, and each child deserves to be treated as an individual.

Pet van helps feed Gainesville homeless&#39; pets | WUFT News

When Elizabeth Howard went to an event supporting the homeless about six years ago, she was thinking about pet food.

?I knew I wanted to do something to help the homeless people, but I?m an animal rights activist and have been for quite a while now,? she said. ?So I thought, ?Well, OK, I?ll get the pet food for the homeless people for their dogs and cats.??

Howard started the Home Van Pet Care Project five years ago, a companion to the Home Van, a nonprofit that feeds the homeless.

She said she started with ?one little bag? of pet food someone donated. Now, the Gainesville nonprofit donates 100 pounds each of dog food and cat food every week.

After following the Home Van with her own car for awhile, Howard began distributing the pet food ? packed in gallon-size Ziploc bags ? on Wednesdays at the library.

Howard said she isn?t sure how much longer she can sustain the program, though. The nonprofit needs more hands to pack bags of food and deliver them, she said.

?It?s a little scary right now,? she said. ?I don?t know which way to go with some of this.?

Howard said?although it?s hard to care for pets, the homeless need the love and companionship pets provide. She emphasized because Home Van Pet Care is?a type of food bank, the food it provides is only a supplement and not enough to sustain pets.

?We try to get everybody to find out where they can get more food and how they can feed their animals well,? she said.

UN: Thawing permafrost to cause increased warming

DOHA, Qatar (AP) ? The United Nations is warning that a thawing in the permafrost that covers almost a quarter of the northern hemisphere could "significantly amplify global warming."

The warning came in a U.N. report released as climate talks intensified on Tuesday in Qatar.

The report says the dangers of carbon dioxide and methane emissions from warming permafrost are becoming an emerging issue among climate scientists. These dangers have so far not been factored in projections about future temperature rises.

Representatives from over 200 countries are negotiating a climate deal in Doha that would keep global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees C (3.6 F) ? compared to preindustrial times ? by 2100.

The World Bank has projected temperatures to increase by up to 4 degrees C (7.2 F) by then.

Wall Street falls on caution after rally, retail drags

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks eased on Monday as a mixed start to the holiday shopping season, caution over Greek aid talks and budget discussions in Washington gave investors reason to pause after Wall Street posted its best week in over five months.

While holiday shopping appeared to be off to a good start, analysts cautioned against reading too much into one weekend's numbers. Retailers need to sustain the initial burst through the November-December holiday season, which can account for a third of annual sales and 40 to 50 percent of profits for the year.

Shares in department store operator Macy's Inc , which offered consumers deep discounts on Black Friday, fell 3.6 percent to $40.22. The SPDR S&P retail exchange-traded fund fell 1.3 percent to $62.39.

"The underwhelming performance of retailers in general is hurting the market," said Michael James, a senior trader at Wedbush Morgan in Los Angeles. "Retail is certainly seeing a mixed bag."

Investors continued to chew over two of the greatest overhangs for markets. Euro zone finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund will seek to unfreeze the second bailout package for Greece on Monday. At the same time, U.S. lawmakers have made little progress in the past 10 days toward a compromise to avoid the harsh tax increases and government spending cuts schedule to start in January.

"Friday was a big day in the stock market," said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer at Solaris Group in Bedford Hills, New York. "So it's not surprising at all to see some profit-taking on that."

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 88.58 points, or 0.68 percent, to 12,921.10. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 8.40 points, or 0.60 percent, to 1,400.75. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 5.84 points, or 0.20 percent, to 2,961.01.

Total spending for the Black Friday long weekend rose 12.8 percent from last year, to $59.1 billion, from last year, according to the National Retail Federation. That pace was down from the prior year's 16.4 percent increase.

Black Friday's online sales topped $1 billion for the first time ever as more consumers used the Internet do their early holiday shopping, comScore Inc said on Sunday.

Major indexes ended last week with gains of 3 to 4 percent, recovering some of their losses following an 8 percent correction since September. The Dow and S&P 500 both closed above key technical levels for the first time since November 6, which could provide additional support. The Dow ended above 13,000, while the S&P broke above 1,400.

In company news, shares of Knight Capital Group Inc jumped 10.4 percent to $2.75. A source familiar with the matter on Saturday said the company is in talks about possibly selling its market-making operation, its largest and most profitable business, but it is not known if a deal will happen. Knight's chief executive, in an internal memo, said the company currently is in talks with at least two firms on the possible sale of its largest business unit, but would only pursue a deal if it created value for its shareholders and clients.

Qatar has cashed in its remaining warrants in Britain's Barclays Plc , a move that should yield a $280 million profit. The warrants have not yet been converted, but conversion would dilute the holding of shares by other investors. U.S.-listed shares of Barclays fell 5.6 percent to $15.37.

Apple Inc has asked a federal court to add six more products to its patent infringement lawsuit against Samsung Electronics Co , including the Samsung Galaxy Note II, in the latest move in an ongoing legal war between the two companies. Apple shares were up 1.7 percent at $581.

Benefits fight brings lesbian couple to high court

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Like a lot of newlyweds, Karen Golinski was eager to enjoy the financial fruits of marriage. Within weeks of her wedding, she applied to add her spouse to her employer-sponsored health care plan, a move that would save the couple thousands of dollars a year.

Her ordinarily routine request still is being debated more than four years later, and by the likes of former attorneys general, a slew of senators, the Obama administration and possibly this week, the U.S. Supreme Court.

Because Golinski is married to another woman and works for the U.S. government, her claim for benefits has morphed into a multi-layered legal challenge to a 1996 law that prohibits the federal government from recognizing unions like hers.

The high court has scheduled a closed-door conference for Friday to review Golinski's case and four others that also seek to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act overwhelmingly approved by Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton.

The purpose of the meeting is to decide which, if any, to put on the court's schedule for arguments next year.

The outcome carries economic and social consequences for gay, lesbian and bisexual couples, who now are unable to access Social Security survivor benefits, file joint income taxes, inherit a deceased spouse's pension or obtain family health insurance.

The other plaintiffs in the cases pending before the court include the state of Massachusetts, 13 couples and five widows and widowers.

"It's pretty monumental and it's an honor," said Golinski, a staff lawyer for the federal appeals court based in San Francisco who married her partner of 23 years, Amy Cunninghis, during the brief 2008 window when same-sex marriages were legal in California.

The federal trial courts that heard the cases all ruled the act violates the civil rights of legally married gays and lesbians. Two appellate courts agreed, making it highly likely the high court will agree to hear at least one of the appeals, Lambda Legal Executive Director Jon Davidson said.

"I don't think we've ever had an occasion where the Supreme Court has had so many gay rights cases knocking at its door," said Davidson, whose gay legal advocacy group represents Golinski. "That in and of itself shows how far we've come."

The Supreme Court also is scheduled to discuss Friday whether it should take two more long-simmering cases dealing with relationship recognition for same-sex couples.

One is an appeal of two lower court rulings that struck down California's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage. The other is a challenge to an Arizona law that made state employees in same-sex relationships ineligible for domestic partner benefits.

The last time the court confronted a gay rights case was in 2010, when the justices voted 5-4 to let stand lower court rulings holding that a California law school could deny recognition to a Christian student group that does not allow gay members.

The time before that was the court's landmark 2003 ruling in Lawrence v. Texas, which declared state anti-sodomy laws to be an unconstitutional violation of personal privacy.

Brigham Young University law professor Lynn Wardle, who testified before Congress when lawmakers were considering the Defense of Marriage Act 16 years ago, said he still thinks the law passes constitutional muster.

"Congress has the power to define for itself domestic relationships, including defining relationships for purposes of federal programs," Wardle said.

At the same time, he said, the gay rights landscape has shifted radically since 1996, citing this month's election of the first sitting president to declare support for same-sex marriage and four state ballot measures being decided in favor of gay rights activists.

"This is the gay moment, momentum is building," Wardle said. "The politics are profound, and politics influence what the court does."

For Golinski and Cunninghis, getting this far has been a long, sometimes frustrating and sometimes heartening journey.

Citing the act, known as DOMA, the Office of Personnel Management, the federal government's human relations arm, initially denied Golinski's attempt to enroll Cunninghis in the medical coverage she had selected for herself and the couple's son, now 10.

"I got a phone call from OPM in Washington, D.C., asking me to confirm that Amy Cunninghis was female, and I said, 'Yes, she is,' and they said, 'We won't be able to add her to your health plan," Golinski recalled.

Golinski knew that her employer, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, had a policy prohibiting discrimination against gay workers, so she filed an employee grievance and won a hearing before the court's dispute resolution officer, Chief Judge Alex Kozinski.

As a lawyer for the court, she felt awkward about pursuing the issue, but she was also angry. Lambda Legal and a San Francisco law firm offered to represent her.

"I had been working for the courts since 1990, and I feel, like everybody, I work hard and I'm a valuable employee, and I'm not getting paid the same amount if I have to pay for a whole separate plan for Amy," she said. "It was really hurting our family."

Kozinski ruled that Golinski was entitled to full spousal benefits, but federal officials ordered Golinski's insurer not to process her application, prompting the chief judge to issue a scathing opinion on her behalf.

After the government refused to budge, Golinski sued in January 2010.

The couple had joked about whether they "would make a federal case" out of their situation. Cunninghis noted that their genders would not have been an issue had Golinski worked in the private sector or in state or local government where domestic partnerships are offered.

Because of DOMA, she said, "we don't get access to a whole slew of benefits."

The Department of Justice originally opposed Golinski in court but changed course last year after President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder said they would no longer defend the law.

Republican members of the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group, which oversees legal activities of the House of Representatives, voted to hire an outside lawyer first to back the act in Golinski's case and the four others, and to then appeal the rulings on its unconstitutionality.

U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White handed Cunninghis and Golinski an unequivocal victory in February, finding that anti-gay sentiment motivated Congress to pass DOMA.

In ordering the government to allow Golinski to enroll her wife in a family health plan, White rejected all of the House group's arguments, including that the law was necessary to foster stable unions among men and women.

A group of 10 U.S. senators who voted for DOMA in 1996 have filed a brief with the Supreme Court angrily denouncing the judge's opinion and urging the high court to overturn it.

"It is one thing for the District Court to conclude that traditional moral views, standing alone, do not justify the enactment of DOMA; it is quite another to find that legislators who hold or express such moral views somehow taint the constitutionality of the statute," they said.

Former U.S. Attorneys General John Ashcroft and Edwin Meese also weighed in, telling the court that Obama had failed in his duty and set a dangerous precedent by declining to defend DOMA.

As a result of White's ruling, Cunninghis was allowed in March to be added to Golinski's health plan.

Golinski so far is the only gay American who has been allowed to begin receiving federal benefits while DOMA remains in effect, a development that could be reversed if the Supreme Court upholds DOMA.

Until then, the couple said they are going to trust that the tide of history is moving toward gay rights.

"It seems so simple to us: just put me on the family health plan," Cunninghis said. "It's much bigger than that obviously, yet it isn't."

Obama visits bookstore, promotes 'Small Business Saturday'

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama, in a bid to show support for small businesses, took his daughters on an early Christmas shopping trip on Saturday as the U.S. retail sector swings into high gear this holiday season.

Promoting "Small Business Saturday," the third annual event that encourages consumers to support independently-owned local shops, Obama took his daughters Sasha and Malia to "One More Page Books" in Arlington, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C.

"Preparation," said Obama, while talking to the store owner at the front counter and looking at his BlackBerry, apparently checking book titles while his daughters stood at his side. "That's how I shop."

Over the last two decades, small businesses have created two of every three U.S. jobs. To try to spur job growth, the Obama administration says it aims to cut taxes for small businesses and expand entrepreneurs' access to financing.

Both Main Street merchants and larger retailers will find out soon if the so-called fiscal cliff that threatens to produce tax increases and automatic spending cuts in January will subdue shoppers and hold back spending this holiday season.

Congress and Obama are about to negotiate on a deal to avert the roughly $600 billion in tax increases and spending cuts set to start jolting the economy at the beginning of 2013.

Asked by reporters what is needed to cushion the economic impact of the looming fiscal cliff, Obama declined to answer, saying "we're doing Christmas shopping."

The White House said Obama bought 15 children's books that will be given as Christmas gifts to family members.

Last year, more than 100 million Americans shopped locally on Small Business Saturday, according to an estimate by American Express.

Small businesses taking part in the initiative use social networks like Facebook and Twitter to promote deals and attract potential customers.

Taking to Twitter himself after the shopping excursion, Obama wrote: "My family & I started our holiday shopping at a local bookstore on #SmallBizSat. I hope you'll join & shop small this holiday season."

The nationwide initiative that urges customers to open their wallets to local businesses follows Black Friday, one the nation's busiest shopping days at major retailers falling the day after Thanksgiving.

The Monday after Thanksgiving is known as Cyber Monday, where deals are found on the Internet and is more often a hit with shoppers unwilling to brave long lines.

Superstorm moves film from theoretical to concrete

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? In the documentary "Shored Up," scientists warn that with a rising sea level, a major storm could put New Jersey's barrier islands underwater and create devastating storm surges. In other words, what happened last month when Superstorm Sandy slammed into New Jersey and New York.

For Ben Kalina, the Philadelphia filmmaker who was nearly finished putting together the documentary when the storm hit, it meant that the ideas in the film that may have sounded far-fetched ? or at least, discussions of something that may happen sometime in the future ? were suddenly immediate.

"Until Sandy, we were making a film about something much more meditative, really," Kalina said. "And now the stakes are suddenly much more real."

It also meant Kalina and his crew had more shooting to do, revisiting places they'd shot ? some of which were wiped away by Sandy.

That again pushed back the completion date for a film he'd been working on for three years. He's now planning to finish the film in January. It's an independent effort that he is hoping will be shown on television. He is also planning to hold screenings, particularly in the places featured in the movie, such as New Jersey's Long Beach Island.

Kalina, 36, is not a scientist, but he's fascinated by telling the stories from science by looking at the cultural and political implications, too. He worked on "A Sea Change," about the state of the world's oceans, and "After the Cap," a look back at the Gulf oil spill of 2010, among other films.

He became interested in the state of barrier islands after reading an article about how surfers opposed beach replenishment projects on the New Jersey shore.

The story became broader than that, evolving into a look at the way shore areas are developed and protected through means like jetties and beach replenishment projects. As more structures are built on barrier islands, he said, more has to be done to protect them. "Once you decide to settle in a place that's so fraught, all the decisions you make have consequences and more consequences," he said.

The solutions can be expensive, and Kalina says, not sustainable.

"Beach replenishment is not going to save the day," he said. "You get this sense of security from beach replenishment that's a false sense of security in the long run."

The film uses animation, interviews with scientists, footage of storms past and some dramatic policy debates to tell the story.

Kalina started out focusing on New Jersey's Long Beach Island, but also traveled to North Carolina. There, officials decided this year to use historical trends to build their expectations for oceanside building codes and land-use decisions rather than the more rapid sea-level rise that many scientists now expect.

The filmmaker, who grew up going to family homes on Martha's Vineyard, said the ideal time to address these how best to develop vulnerable coastlines would be before a major storm, not after one.

The irony is that nothing can draw attention to the issue like a storm.

"It's a window of time when people have actually just witnessed the destructive force of nature," he said. "There are very few windows like that."

And it could also be a window for his movie.

Before the storm, when he talked about it in his neighborhood in South Philadelphia, Kalina said, he found himself explaining what a barrier island is.

    Now, practically everyone knows.

Obama In 2004: 'We're Not Fighting Terrorists, We're Fighting People Who Engage In Terrorism'

During a November 2004 reading and Q&A session to promote his memoir, "Dreams From My Father," President Obama, then a senator-elect, detailed his views on the motivations behind terrorism and the role U.S. foreign policy plays in such situations.

The comments, unearthed by MSNBC's "Up W/Chris Hayes," came when Obama was asked about terrorism at a Barnes & Noble bookstore in New York City. In his answer, Obama advocated for more of a "soft power" approach, or using attraction rather than coercion or force when dealing with foreign powers.

"Ultimately, terrorism is a tactic. We're not fighting terrorists, we're fighting people who engage in terrorism, but have a whole host of rationales and excuses for why they do this," Obama said. "And to the extent that we can change the sense of opportunity in many of these countries, we can change the manner in which we function in these countries in more positive, proactive ways, then we're not going to eliminate terrorism entirely but we're at least going to be able to make more of a dent than if all we're resorting to is military firepower."

Eight years later, Obama's past comments are particularly notable in the context of his approach to counterterrorism as president. As The Huffington Post's Joshua Hersh reported, Obama's response to terrorism -- particularly through the use of drone strikes -- will be a major challenge in his second term:

As it stands now, the Obama administration, which vastly stepped up the use of drones and targeted killings over the past four years, has done little to assuage the concerns of outsiders about the program's legality or utility. Indeed, the drone program's components are so secret that the administration routinely refuses to acknowledge that it even exists.

In a second term, that stonewalling may no longer be possible, particularly as new questions are raised about whether the program is legal, or if it even works. The fact that administration officials have offered justifications for the program in narrow speeches and interviews only adds to that sense of inevitability.

"It's very unclear what the United States is actually doing in Yemen other than they carry out bombings and people on the ground are dying," said Gregory Johnsen, an expert on Al Qaeda in Yemen and the author of a new book on the subject. "Who's dying, whether or not they're actually Al Qaeda -- we just don't know."

Obama's 2004 comments have resurfaced just days after deadly fighting between Israel and Hamas temporarily halted in a ceasefire agreement. Some, including the Jerusalem Fund's Yousef Munayyer, have argued that American policies toward Israel and Palestine have sent the wrong message about using violence.

"The failure of America?s approach toward the Israelis and the Palestinians, much like its flawed policies toward the region in general, is founded on the assumption that American hard power, through support for Israel and other Middle Eastern governments, can keep the legitimate grievances of the people under wraps," Munayyer wrote in a New York Times op-ed. "By constantly condemning Palestinian armed resistance, and failing to condemn Israeli settlement expansion and repression of nonviolent Palestinian dissent, the message the United States is sending the Palestinian people is this: All resistance to occupation is illegitimate."

Prior to the ceasefire agreement, Obama said the United States is "fully supportive of Israel's right to defend itself."

The full report will air on Sunday's edition of "Up W/Chris Hayes."

What&#39;s all the Hype about Self Esteem? | LifeScape

?It seems there is way too much talk about self esteem but despite all the discussion and well intended efforts to bolster it, healthy self esteem remains mysterious and elusive for many.

The more I learn about ?and work with people the more I believe a healthy self esteem is the foundation a of a healthy happy life.

That being said I can recall, especially when I had school age children, lots of odd ideas about what it was, how to instill it and in particular how to avoid squashing it. Some of this information was good, ?some really missed the mark and did not foster real self esteem and may have done the opposite.

So what is self esteem? I like this definition I found on wikipedia:

Self-esteem, is a term in?psychology?to reflect a?person?s overall emotional evaluation of his or her own worth. It is a judgement of oneself as well as an attitude toward the self. Self-esteem encompasses?beliefs?(for example, ?I am competent?, ?I am worthy?) and?emotions?such as triumph,?despair,?pride?and?shame.[1]??The self-concept is?what we thinkabout the self;?self-esteem, is the positive or negative evaluations of the self, as inhow we feel?about it?.[2]

Self-esteem is a disposition that a person has which represents their judgements of their own worthiness.[3]?In the mid 1960s,?Morris Rosenberg?and social-learning theorists defined self-esteem in terms of a stable sense of personal worth or worthiness.[4]?Nathaniel Branden?in 1969 defined self-esteem as ??the experience of being competent to cope with the basic challenges of life and being worthy of happiness?. According to Branden, self-esteem is the sum of?self-confidence?(a feeling of personal capacity) and?self-respect(a feeling of personal worth). It exists as a consequence of the implicit judgement that every person has of their ability to face life?s challenges,to understand and solve problems, and, their right to achieve?happiness, and be given respect.[5]

Self esteem then is your self regard or perception. High, good or healthy self esteem is what we are after.

This is not ego, arrogance or superficial. It is not based on deeds or accomplishments. It is not fragile, dependent on others or defensive.

It is a quiet confidence, acceptance and a comfortable feeling that is lasting.

I believe that is what we need as our foundation to be our best. This acceptance and appreciation of who we are , a clear understanding of ours as well as others intrinsic worth and value and a belief in our capability to manage our lives.

How does it feel to have that?

If you do not, how much of a difference might you experience in your life if you did?

For me it has been impactful although late coming.

An unstable tumultuous childhood did little to develop a sense of self esteem in my childhood, in fact quite the contrary.

I was in my late thirties with many self help books, classes, religious studies and philosophies under my belt before I came to realize my own self acceptance, worth and esteem.

A workshop by Debbie Ford provide the impetus to bring everything together for me. A moment of transformation where I saw things and saw myself differently? permanently and completely.

It is a life changer; not that one still does not have moments of doubt and absolute idiocy,(many), ?just that those moments do no damage and the sense that all is well remains intact. It is a knowing that you are more than what you do or how you appear. It changes how you look at yourself of course but also it is the truest route to acceptance of others and that is such a pleasure as well.

If you are the fortunate minority that have healthy self esteem enjoy it. It will support and propel you in all your pursuits.

However, if this has been a struggle for you, know that you may count yourself with the majority but need not remain that way.

With an open mind and some effort this can be improved and when it is everything in life improves with it.

What do you think are the top 3 things that make you valuable?

What if those things were gone?

Are you dependent on the good opinion or praise of others for a sense of pride or accomplishment?

Do you become angry or hurt when someone criticizes you?

What might it be worth to discover your worth and find real acceptance and healthy self esteem?

You are worth the effort? believe me
