Obama, Congress set for one last effort on "fiscal cliff"

WASHINGTON/HONOLULU (Reuters) - President Barack Obama is due back in Washington early Thursday for a final effort to negotiate a deal with Congress to avert or at least postpone the "fiscal cliff" of tax increases and government spending cuts set to begin next week.

No specific bill dealing with the cliff was on the schedule of either the U.S. Senate or House of Representatives, which are expected to return on Thursday after the holiday break. Investors are closely watching the talks, concerned that going over the cliff could throw the economy into recession.

Aides and members of Congress have said that a modest, last-minute measure to avoid the spending cuts and most of the tax hikes could pass the Democratic-controlled Senate if Republicans agree not use a procedural roadblock known as a filibuster, a commitment that Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell has so far not made.

But to win approval in the Republican-controlled House of any bill that raises taxes on anyone, a rare bipartisan vote would be required. All 191 Democrats would have to team with up with at least 26 Republicans to get a majority if the bill included tax hikes on the wealthiest Americans, as Obama is demanding.

Some of those votes could conceivably come from among the 34 Republican members who are either retiring or were defeated in the November elections and no longer have to worry about the political fallout.

In the alternative, Congress could let income taxes go up on everyone as now scheduled and then during the first week of January, scramble and get a quick deal to cut them back except for the highest brackets, along with a measure putting off the $109 billion in automatic spending cuts that most lawmakers want to avoid.

Once the clock ticks past midnight on December 31, no member of Congress would have to vote for a tax increase on anyone - taxes would have risen automatically - and the only votes would be to decrease tax rates for most Americans back to their 2012 levels.

Obama and congressional lawmakers left Washington on Friday for the Christmas holiday with talks to avert the fiscal cliff in limbo.

The president will cut short his vacation in Hawaii and leave for Washington later on Wednesday, arriving in the capital on early Thursday.

Obama is expected to turn to a trusted Democratic ally, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, to help craft a quick deal.

White House aides began discussing details of the year-end budget measure with Senate Democratic counterparts early this week, a senior administration official said on Monday

New Scientist 2012 holiday quiz

THIS was the year we held our breath in almost unbearable anticipation while we waited to see whether physicists at the Large Hadron Collider would finally get a clear view of the Higgs boson, so tantalisingly hinted at last December. Going a bit blue, we held on through March when one of the LHC's detectors seemed to lose sight of the thing, before exhaling in a puff of almost-resolution in July, when researchers announced that the data added up to a fairly confident pretty-much-actual-discovery of the particle.

Early indications were that it might be a weird and wonderful variety of the Higgs, prompting a collective gasp of excitement. That was followed by a synchronised sigh of mild disappointment when later data implied that it was probably the most boring possible version after all, and not a strange entity pointing the way to new dimensions and the true nature of dark matter. Prepare yourself for another puff or two as the big story moves on next year.

This respirational rollercoaster might be running a bit too slowly to supply enough oxygen to the brain of a New Scientist reader, so we have taken care to provide more frequent oohs and aahs using less momentous revelations. See how many of the following unfundamental discoveries you can distinguish from the truth-free mimics that crowd parasitically around them.

1. Which of these anatomical incongruities of the animal kingdom did we describe on 14 July?

  • a) A fish, found in a canal in Vietnam, that wears its genitals under its mouth
  • b) A frog, found in a puddle in Peru, that has no spleen
  • c) A lizard, found in a cave in Indonesia, that has four left feet
  • d) A cat, found in a tree in northern England, that has eight extra teeth

2. "A sprout by any other name would taste as foul." So wrote William Shakespeare in his diary on 25 December 1598, setting off the centuries of slightly unjust ridicule experienced by this routinely over-cooked vegetable. But which forbiddingly named veg did we report on 7 July as having more health-giving power than the sprout, its active ingredient being trialled as a treatment for prostate cancer?

  • a) Poison celery
  • b) Murder beans
  • c) Inconvenience potatoes
  • d) Death carrots

3. Scientists often like to say they are opening a new window on things. Usually that is a metaphor, but on 10 November we reported on a more literal innovation in the fenestral realm. It was:

  • a) A perspex peephole set in the nest of the fearsome Japanese giant hornet, to reveal its domestic habits
  • b) A glass porthole implanted in the abdomen of a mouse, to reveal the process of tumour metastasis
  • c) A crystal portal in the inner vessel of an experimental thorium reactor, to reveal its nuclear fires to the naked eye
  • d) A small window high on the wall of a basement office in the Princeton physics department, to reveal a small patch of sky to postgraduate students who have not been outside for seven years

4. On 10 March we described a new material for violin strings, said to produce a brilliant and complex sound richer than that of catgut. What makes up these super strings?

  • a) Mousegut
  • b) Spider silk
  • c) Braided carbon nanotubes
  • d) An alloy of yttrium and ytterbium

5. While the peril of climate change looms inexorably larger, in this festive-for-some season we might take a minute to look on the bright side. On 17 March we reported on one benefit of global warming, which might make life better for some people for a while. It was:

  • a) Receding Arctic sea ice will make it easier to lay undersea cables to boost internet speeds
  • b) Increasing temperatures mean that Greenlanders can soon start making their own wine
  • c) Rising sea levels could allow a string of new beach resorts to open in the impoverished country of Chad
  • d) More acidic seawater will add a pleasant tang to the salt water taffy sweets made in Atlantic City

6. In Alaska's Glacier Bay national park, the brown bear in the photo (above, right) is doing something never before witnessed among bearkind, as we revealed on 10 March. Is it:

  • a) Making a phonecall?
  • b) Gnawing at a piece of whalebone to dislodge a rotten tooth?
  • c) Scratching itself with a barnacle-covered stone tool?
  • d) Cracking oysters on its jaw?

7. Men have much in common with fruit flies, as we revealed on 24 March. When the sexual advances of a male fruit fly are rejected, he may respond by:

  • a) Whining
  • b) Hitting the booze
  • c) Jumping off a tall building
  • d) Hovering around the choosy female long after all hope is lost

8. While great Higgsian things were happening at the LHC, scientists puzzled over a newly urgent question: what should we call the boson? Peter Higgs wasn't the only physicist to predict its existence, and some have suggested that the particle's name should also include those other theorists or perhaps reflect some other aspect of the particle. Which of the following is a real suggestion that we reported on 24 March?

Health & Fitness Solutions: Self-Hypnosis Techniques - 3 That ...

By Mamie Nanez

It's important that you become familiar with the field of hypnosis - especially self-hypnosis - and one of the best ways to do so is to start by reading shorter reports like this one to begin your knowledge base. Delve into the subject wholeheartedly and you will find that it doesn't take long to get a well-rounded grasp of what hypnosis is all about. Hypnosis is not a difficult subject to comprehend as there's really nothing complicated about it. The same holds true for self-hypnosis.

Since we are all so different, you may find the need to use self-hypnosis many times. The important thing is not how many times you need to use a particular script for some particular goal. The only thing that counts is that you are triumphant with it and get to the target you had in the first place. There is no way to know how you will respond to self-hypnosis until you try it out. An additional point that is critical is that it takes many applications to get to the phase where your endeavours are really valuable. You will more than likely not have the greatest execution at the start and you will not be entirely at ease with the procedure.

For a self-hypnosis session to be effective, you have to choose a place that is quiet. Try to remove all distractions from the place before commencing a session.

Creating your own personal space to practice your self-hypnosis is a good thing to do. Your ideal scenario could be in a cool, low-lit room with candles and incense.

Once you have decided to use self-hypnosis, you need to make a commitment. Unless you are fully committed and have confidence it will not work for you. It is imperative that you have conviction and believe the necessary things that need to change will. Hopefully you already have a good idea of the impact that faith and conviction have for favourable results. The whole concept of hypnosis, whether it is done by a therapist or by ones self, is up for disbelief by many. There are folks that have been assisted with the use of hypnosis throughout time and in many instances.

Every script to write and design needs to be exquisite for each hypnosis session. Consider that you are trying to reach your unconscious mind directly. That means you have to bypass your ordinary consciousness that looks at the world in a critical manner. So you have to know exactly how to use the right words that will be the most effective. You can buy self-hypnosis tapes or even buy scripts from hypnotherapists. A licensed trained hypnotherapist should be where this material comes from. They are governed by hypnosis organizations that will make sure they are on the straight and narrow. Your local area, and certainly the Internet, will have people you can talk to. In conclusion, there are many other self-hypnosis tips that are available. You can learn them if you want. Just be sure you are getting quality information from the web. Building a website, and populating it with information, is very easy to do - this is why you need to be careful with the info that you find.

95% Argo

All Critics (243) | Top Critics (43) | Fresh (232) | Rotten (11)

'Argo' is one of the best movies of the year.

Argo has that solid, kick-the-tires feel of those studio films from the 70s that were about something but also entertained. Only it's as laugh outright amusing as it is sobering.

The movieland satire is laid on thick, but it's also deadly accurate. Schlock has never seemed so patriotic, and Arkin and Goodman have rarely been so good.

Argo is a rollicking yarn, easily the most cohesive and technically accomplished of Affleck's three films so far, but a part of me wishes the director hadn't cast himself in the lead role.

If nothing else, it proves that every so often, the CIA can pull something off - and that yes, Canadians are just about the nicest people on the planet.

The film is a whopper of a tale, one designed for Oscar nominations, Best Picture and Best Director among them.

This may be the most geek-friendly movie that never did the rounds at Comic-Con.

When Tony (Ben Affleck) lands in Tehran and trains the frightened Americans to play their parts as a Canadian film crew, Argo compares the ruses run by governments and movie studios.

The whole thing is paced like a whip, and the third act may literally be the most suspenseful piece of film I've ever seen - and yes, I have seen Rear Window. Recommended without any reservation for every and any cinemagoer.

A terrific supporting cast, especially the non A-list actors, make the dramatic license taken justified and redeem Affleck for miscasting himself in the hero's role.

A brilliant thriller that's based on a historical incident, 'Argo' is one of the best films of 2012.

A wonderfully lively and engrossing movie ...

An enthralling and deliciously entertaining movie -- and a deserved triumph for its star and director.

The details make for a rip-roaring story, which Affleck invests with old-school directorial ?lan.

Ben Affleck leaps on to the A-list of directors with this relentlessly entertaining thriller, combining comedy and nerve-jangling suspense to maximum effect.

If you're a nailbiter, bring gloves, because the suspense will see you reach your knuckles.

Surprisingly enjoyable, given that you may have little prior commitment to this story and only mildly fancy Affleck.

Affleck skilfully turns the screw of suspense, gaining added traction from an extremely convincing recreation of the setting and period.

Ben Affleck's movie tells an amazing but true story set against the context of the Iranian hostage crisis.

Talent borrows and genius steals, but Affleck does something in between: he mimics.

It's impossible to be bored by a story this good, especially with that cast.

Part of what makes this headspinning story believable is the fact that it pans out in an oddly uncomplicated way.

The shaggy and bearded Ben Affleck, barely recognisable from his former self, gives a great lead performance. Understated, intense and steely-eyed, Affleck has the screen presence of legendary actor/director Clint Eastwood.

Affleck the director is utterly sure-footed with an instinctive feel for characterization, tension and pacing as he builds the action towards a nail-biting climax.

A dum-tight thriller demonstrating that Affleck is one of the most accomplished directors working in Hollywood today.

Latest NYC Study Unable to Link Cancers like Mesothelioma to 9/11 ...

An extensive study done by the New York City Health Department found no definitive link between various cancers and the toxic dusk and fumes surrounding the World Trade Center terrorist attack more than 11 years ago.

The study, published Wednesday in the Journal of American Medical Association, comes just six months after the federal government added 50 different cancers to the list of illnesses covered by the $4.3 billion James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

The New York City study was the most extensive ever done regarding health issues stemming from the burning wreckage at the 9/11 site that included smoke and fumes filled with known carcinogens like asbestos, benzene, polycyclic hydrocarbons, silica and other toxic chemicals.

There were an estimated 400 tons of asbestos used in the building of the Twin Towers, which were part of the World Trade Center attack on Sept. 11, 2001 that killed close to 3,000 people.

An exposure to asbestos, for example, has been proven to cause a number of serious illnesses, including?mesothelioma cancer, lung cancer, and asbestosis. The World Trade Center Health Registry estimates that 410,000 people were exposed to the toxins that were present in the air for weeks after the attack.

Mesothelioma, like many cancers, has a long latency period. It can take anywhere from 10 to 60 years after exposure to asbestos before obvious symptoms appear and a definitive diagnosis can be made.

Although the latest, most extensive study done involved 56,000 people who enrolled in the registry, it used only data collected from 2001 to 2008, well before many of the cancers would be expected to arise.

The New York City study, done with the help of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), showed a link with thyroid, prostate and myeloma cancers, but only for the rescue and recovery workers who were exposed for extended periods of time as they worked around the wreckage. They found no evidence to support a link to most other cancers, or any links to those whose exposure to the toxins was for shorter periods of time.

The study, which almost refutes some earlier, more popular beliefs, is expected to fuel debate on the wisdom of adding so many cancers to be covered by federal funding. There have been at least two confirmed rescue workers from the wreckage who have died from mesothelioma cancer, in 2004 and 2006.

?Cancers take 20 years to develop,? Thomas Farley, M.D., health commissioner in New York City, told the New York Times. ?And we might see something different 20 years down the line. But don?t want to wait 20 to 30 years to get a definitive answer.?

The 9/11 Health and Compensation Act originally was designed to cover mostly respiratory illnesses, which were well documented. Early studies in New York strongly linked cases of asthma, and post-traumatic stress disorder, with the toxic dust. The blanket cancer coverage came earlier this year, and is expected to exhaust the $4.3 billion fund much quicker than it would have been.

Dr. John Howard, head of NIOSH who made the final decision, was under considerable pressure to add cancer to the list of illnesses covered, and received praise for his decision that was signed into law by President Obama. The NYC study, though, now has others questioning the expenditure at a time of huge federal deficits. It may affect the willingness of Congress to replenish the fund in the future.

The new study included everyone from rescue workers and emergency responders to residents of Manhattan and others who fled the site and never returned. It found 67 cases of prostate cancer, 13 cases of thyroid cancer, and seven cases of myeloma. All three cancers had higher incidence rates among the registry than the general population in the state of New York.

The researchers pointed out that it was too early to draw any conclusions from their study. People who volunteered for the study were more likely to already have symptoms than those who did not volunteer.

?There is no evidence that 9/11 caused any of these cancers,? Donald Berry, biostatistics professor at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, told the Associated Press.? He said that definitive conclusions were impossible because the study had too many limitations.

haidarr: VOR Calls for Mental Health Reform - Extends Heartfelt ...

?Politics over diverse issues have divided our nation,? said Julie Huso, VOR Executive Director. ?There can be no justice for these senseless killings in Connecticut and elsewhere, but uniting as a nation will get us as close to healing as possible and help prevent tragedies in the future.?

Elk Grove Village, IL (PRWEB) December 21, 2012

VOR, a national organization advocating for high quality care and human rights for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, joins the chorus of heartfelt sympathy expressed for the families and friends of the victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy. While many citizens and organizations are taking aim at gun control, VOR believes that systemic reform of disability and mental health policies is critically necessary to prevent future violence.

?Politics over diverse issues have divided our nation,? said Julie Huso, VOR Executive Director. ?There can be no justice for these senseless killings in Connecticut and elsewhere, but uniting as a nation will get us as close to healing as possible and help prevent tragedies in the future.?

?We can't tolerate this anymore,? stated President Barak Obama, as he addressed a grieving nation Sunday night. ??These tragedies must end, and to end them, we must change.? (Transcript of President?s Remarks __Transcript of President?s Remarks __, reprinted by The Washington Post, December 16, 2012)

For 30 years, VOR has been calling on Congress to support specialized treatment options for people with profound intellectual and developmental disabilities.

?Too many people who need help have nowhere to go, are turned away, are displaced from specialized care, or are not adequately treated and monitored,? said Huso. ?Patients? rights have trumped almost completely safety ? to self and others -- in the name of ?deinstitutionalization? and ?integration.??

Decades of deinstitutionalization has resulted in the depletion of an adequate safety net for people who need our help.

?Our mental health system has completely failed individuals with severe mental illness and their communities,? said Doris A. Fuller, executive director for the Treatment Advocacy Center, a nonprofit organization which advocates for timely and effective treatment of severe mental illness. ?We have emptied the nation's hospitals, gutted state and local mental health programs, and turned involuntary treatment into a debate point instead of using it as a viable option to prevent tragedy involving those too ill to help themselves.? [Treatment for Mental Illness Should be as Easy to Get as Guns, Treatment Advocacy Center (December 14, 2012)].

Beginning in the 1960s, closing specialized care centers for people with developmental disabilities and mental illness ? ?deinstitutionalization? ? was meant to advance the civil liberties of those inappropriately institutionalized by offering care and supports in a less restrictive environment.

Some advocates, however, say deinstitutionalization has gone much too far. Today, people with profound developmental disabilities and health concerns, and those with severe mental illness, are being removed from highly specialized care or prevented from accessing such care in the first place.

?What began with altruistic motives ? namely, better and more appropriate care for disabled people ? has spawned into something very different,? remarked Huso. ?Today, very fragile people are being forced from their homes under the belief that money will be saved and quality of life will improve.?

?We?re protecting civil liberties at the expense of health and safety,? says Fuller. ?Deinstitutionalization has gone way too far.? (?Seven facts about America?s mental health-care system,? The Washington Post (quoting Fuller) (December 14, 2012))

VOR calls for reform, beginning with a moratorium on deinstitutionalization

Tragedies will continue to befall people with I/DD, children, adults, and citizens if our laws and policies continue to support deinstitutionalization, depriving people with disabilities of needed specialized, residential care and treatment.

?Over and over again, news investigations and state audits show that these very fragile individuals need comprehensive, skilled care. They are the ICU residents of the disability community. Scattering them in homes around a community only separates them from qualified staff, life-sustaining health care, oversight, and friends,? said Ann Knighton, VOR?s president.

?Prison is now the last resort for the mentally ill,? wrote Liza Long, whose son, Michael has severe mental illness. [?I am Adam Lanza?s Mother,? by Liza Long (The Blue Review, December 14, 2012)].

President Obama vowed to use ?whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens, from law enforcement, to mental health professionals, to parents and educators, in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this.? (Transcript of President?s Remarks, reprinted by The Washington Post, December 16, 2012)

Yet, a significant part of the problem begins at his doorstep, says VOR.

?Significant federal funds and energies by powerful federal agencies are dedicated to deinstitutionalization,? said Tamie Hopp, Director of Government Relations and Advocacy for VOR. ?The Justice Department has pursued more than 30 legal actions which at their core aim to displace individuals from specialized care options. In Georgia, a Justice Department settlement calls for moving 9,000 people with mental illness from mental health facilities by 2015.? (?Olmstead: Community Integration for everyone,? U.S Department of Justice?s Olmstead Enforcement Website); (U.S. v. Georgia Fact Sheet, U.S. Department of Justice (October 19, 2012)

Likewise, in a move that VOR characterizes as ?reckless,? the National Council on Disability, an independent federal agency, last month released a 300 page policy document and toolkit calling for the closure of all ?institutions,? which it defines as any setting larger than 4 people. [?Deinstitutionalization: Unfinished Business,? National Council on Disability (November 2012); ?Reckless disregard shown for the needs and choices of vulnerable persons with severe and profound disabilities,? VOR (December 2012)]

?As a nation, the Sandy Hook tragedies have left us heartbroken,? said Hopp. ?Families of individuals with profound cognitive disabilities recognize the reform that is needed better than most. Their sons and daughters need highly specialized treatment. Instead federal agencies, some state governments and advocates, are putting energies into removing their loved ones from treatment?

We agree with the President. ?This must end.? (Transcript of President?s Remarks, reprinted by The Washington Post, December 16, 2012).

How to delete an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac from Find my iPhone

Find my iPhone is a great way to track lost or stolen devices. Once you've got the service set up and configured you're pretty much good to go. But what if you want to delete an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac from Find my iPhone? You will have a need to do this if you ever upgrade and sell your old device, have to swap something out for a new one at the Apple Store, or had a repair done that changed the identifier on the logic board.

So if you've got an entire clutter of devices in your account and some of them aren't even active anymore, we can help you clear those out so you only see the ones that matter right now. Follow along and we'll get it done together.

  1. Go to iCloud.com on your Mac or PC.
  2. Log in to your iCloud account.
  3. On the main screen, click on Find my iPhone.

US home sales surge to highest level in 3 years

(AP) ? U.S. sales of previously occupied homes jumped to their highest level in three years last month, bolstered by steady job gains and record-low mortgage rates. The report was the latest sign of a sustained recovery in the housing market.

The National Association of Realtors said Thursday that sales rose 5.9 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.04 million in November. That's up from 4.76 million in October.

Previously occupied home sales are on track for their best year in five years. November's sales were the highest since November 2009, when a federal tax credit that was soon to expire spurred sales. Excluding that month, last month's sales were the highest since July 2007.

Sales are up 14.5 percent from a year ago, though they remain below the roughly 5.5 million that are consistent with a healthy market.

"The report is encouraging, and the positive momentum established in the housing market during 2012 appears likely to continue into 2013," Michael Gapen, an economist at Barclays Capital, said in an email.

Superstorm Sandy delayed some sales in the Northeast, the Realtors' group said. Those delayed purchases will likely close in the coming months, though the increase will be modest, the group said.

Even so, sales rose 6.9 percent in the Northeast last month compared with October. Sales increased 7.2 percent in the Midwest, 7.9 percent in the South and 0.8 percent in the West.

Job growth and low home-loan rates have helped drive purchases. Prices are also rising, which encourages more potential buyers to come off the sidelines and purchase homes. And more people may put their homes on the market if they feel confident they can sell at a good price.

In addition, the excess supply of homes that built up during the housing bubble has finally thinned out. The number of previously occupied homes available for sale fell to nearly an 11-year low in November. The supply of new homes is also near its lowest level since 1963.

At the current sales pace, it would take 4.8 months to exhaust the supply of homes for sale. That's the shortest such span since September 2005.

At the same time, more people are looking to buy or rent a home after living with relatives or friends during and immediately after the Great Recession.

As low supply and rising demand push up prices, builders will likely be encouraged to start work on more homes in coming months, economists said.

"That's a good reason to feel optimistic about housing next year," said Patrick Newport, an economist at IHS Global Insight. "We just don't have enough homes right now, and we need to start building."

Builder confidence rose in December for a seventh straight month to the highest level in more than 6? years, according to a survey released Tuesday by the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo.

The pace of home construction slipped in November, but it was still nearly 22 percent higher than a year earlier. Builders are on track this year to start work on the most homes in four years.

Economists note that the increase in building should lead to more construction jobs, though it hasn't yet done so. That could mean more construction hiring is coming.

Austrian-based timber manufacturer creates NC jobs

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - An Austrian-based softwood timber manufacturer is establishing a state-of-the-art sawmill in Halifax County with plans to create 350 jobs over the next three years.

Gov. Beverly Perdue's office announced Wednesday that Klausner Lumber Two, a privately-owned company, plans to invest $110 million in the county. The project was made possible in part by state grants from the Job Development Investment Grant and the One North Carolina Fund.

Klausner produces custom-sized rough and planed lumber products that are used in the construction, pressure-treating, secondary processing, furniture and packaging industries. Its mills are known for being among the most productive worldwide.

The proposed Enfield mill will produce construction quality lumber and structural timber for domestic and world markets.

Salaries will average $32,603 per year. Halifax County's average wage is $27,924 per year.

'Light amidst the darkness': Victoria Soto remembered

/

A nation mourns after the second deadliest school shooting in U.S. history at Sandy Hook Elementary, which left 20 children and six staff members dead.

By Tracy Connor and Sandra Lilley, NBC News

One of Newtown?s heroic teachers ? remembered as a bright light on the darkest of days ? was being laid to rest Wednesday.

Mourners who arrived at a church in Stratford, Conn., for Victoria Soto?s funeral were handed ribbons of green, her favorite color.

Obtained by NBC News

Victoria Soto, 27, first-grade teacher at Sandy Hook elementary. Soto had taught for five years and was known by students as silly and loving.

Outside, they spoke of the 27-year-old?s selfless final act: She died trying to protect her first-grade students at Sandy Hook Elementary School from rifle fire during Friday?s massacre, according to her family.

?Mind-boggling what she had to go through,? said family friend Ryan Ortiz, 27. ?No matter how many times I sit at home and think of what I would have done, you just can't imagine being in that situation.

?In my opinion, she was that light amidst the darkness that was going on that day in that school,? Ortiz said. ?There's really no other way to remember her than being that light in that room."

Soto, who was in her fifth year of teaching, was finishing up her daily morning meeting with the students of Classroom 10 when gunman Adam Lanza began his rampage.

Relatives say they were told she hurried the kids into a closet behind her and tried to shield them from the bullets.

Some of the children in her class managed to survive the slaughter. Many did not.

Victims in shooting: Daring principal, fun-loving teacher, 6-year-old twin brother

Funerals were being held Wednesday for three more first-graders -- Charlotte Bacon, Caroline Previdi and Daniel Barden ? continuing a week of mourning.

A large contingent of firefighters arrived for 7-year-old Daniel?s funeral at St. Rome of Lima church in Newtown. Two of his relatives are members of the New York City Fire Department, and he dreamed of wearing the FDNY uniform when he grew up, according to a Facebook post from a firefighters? foundation.

Later on Wednesday, many of Newtown?s residents were expected to attend a wake for Sandy Hook Principal Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, 47, who has been hailed as a hero for running toward the sound of gunfire after Lanza blasted his way into the school.

Family: Boy's favorite teacher died cradling him

At a memorial last week, President Obama held the principal?s granddaughter, just a baby. ?My mom would be so proud,? her daughter tweeted. ?But not as proud as I am of her.?

Many of the services have been marked not just by tears, but by calls for tougher gun laws from those in attendance.

Miguel Padilla, who works with Soto?s father, said he hoped the unity shown in the wake of the tragedy would translate into legislative action.

?With assault rifles, there is no need for those,? he said outside the church. ?If you need to protect yourself, a handgun is good enough. That a 20-year old can get his hands on [an assault rifle] is pathetic.

?Something big has to come out of this,? he added. ?They have to change the law.?

As funerals are held for four more Sandy Hook Elementary victims, President Obama will announce that Vice President Biden will spearhead a panel to formulate gun policies in the aftermath of the Newtown tragedy. NBC's Craig Melvin reports.

IT outsourcing predictions for Europe in 2013. Part Two Berwin ...

Here is another round of preictions about the European IT outsourcing market next year. Yesterday I featured the predictions of KPMG's Lee Ayling . Today it is the turn of outsourcing lawyer mark Lewis of Berwin Leighton Paisner.
mark lewis.jpg

"1. In 2013, business conditions will follow the Chancellor's Autumn Statement, but it will be a busy year for IT and other outsourcers.? My caveat is that fortune will favour the bold and creative.?

2 .We'll see more big companies finally adopting public cloud at enterprise level, and we'll see some of the banks and other financial institutions using public cloud for parts of their businesses.

3. The EU will publish standards and regulations for public cloud that will cause havoc with the US tech sector and the US government will step in.? All cloud providers operating in Europe will have to radically overhaul their contracts, especially in the areas of data protection, sovereignty, mobility and portability.

4. While public cloud will become more important, IT outsourcing will become even harder for complacent or unimaginative suppliers. We'll see even more industrialised, shorter-term, multi-sourced IT outsourcing deals. Only those suppliers who can offer really smart solutions will flourish. For the rest margins will sink even lower.

5. We'll see growth beyond IT infrastructure outsourcing into applications development management, but it will follow the same industrialised route as for IT infrastructure outsourcing.

6. In BPO, only those providers with credible platforms that offer true platform BPO will succeed. Large-scale FTE plays in routine BPO like F&A will flounder and ultimately go the same way as ITO.

7. Only offshore IT and BPO providers that achieve the nirvana of non-linear growth will put on significant revenue and margin growth in 2013.

8. We'll see an upsurge in serious cyber-attacks from hostile states or state-sponsored cyber terrorists on UK government, infrastructure and business. Unfortunately, one or two will succeed and cause serious damage.

9. The UK public sector will open up for massive outsourcing opportunities, both at central and local levels, though they will not be called outsourcing and many will look like privatisation, with the government retaining equity stakes in new outsourcing vehicles.

10. There will again be change at the top in HP (probably the safest prediction of all)."

Tell me what you think by leaving a comment.

Perceived stress may predict future risk of coronary heart disease

Tuesday, December 18, 2012

Are you stressed? Results of a new meta-analysis of six studies involving nearly 120,000 people indicate that the answer to that question may help predict one's risk of incident coronary heart disease (CHD) or death from CHD. The study, led by Columbia University Medical Center researchers, was published in a recent issue of the American Journal of Cardiology.

The six studies included in the analysis were large prospective observational cohort studies in which participants were asked about their perceived stress (e.g., "How stressed do you feel?" or "How often are you stressed?"). Respondents scored either high or low; researchers then followed them for an average of 14 years to compare the number of heart attacks and CHD deaths between the two groups. Results demonstrate that high perceived stress is associated with a 27% increased risk for incident CHD (defined as a new diagnosis or hospitalization) or CHD mortality.

"While it is generally accepted that stress is related to heart disease, this is the first meta-analytic review of the association of perceived stress and incident CHD," said senior author Donald Edmondson, PhD, assistant professor of behavioral medicine at CUMC. "This is the most precise estimate of that relationship, and it gives credence to the widely held belief that general stress is related to heart health. In comparison with traditional cardiovascular risk factors, high stress provides a moderate increase in the risk of CHD ? e.g., the equivalent of a 50 mg/dL increase in LDL cholesterol, a 2.7/1.4 mmHg increase in blood pressure or smoking five more cigarettes per day."

"These findings are significant because they are applicable to nearly everyone," said first author Safiya Richardson, MD, who collaborated with Dr. Edmondson on the paper while attending the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (she graduated in 2012 and is currently a resident at North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System in Manhasset, New York). "The key takeaway is that how people feel is important for their heart health, so anything they can do to reduce stress may improve their heart health in the future."

Coronary heart disease (CHD), also called coronary artery disease, is a narrowing of the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart. It is caused by a buildup of plaque in the arteries, which can lead to hardening of the arteries, or atherosclerosis. CHD is the leading cause of death in the United States for men and women; more than 385,000 people die each year from CHD.

The researchers did further analysis to try to learn what might underlie the association between stress and CHD. They found that while gender was not a significant factor, age was. The people in the studies were between the ages of 43?74 among older people, the relationship between stress and CHD was stronger.

"While we do not know for certain why there appears to be an association between age and the effect of perceived stress on CHD, we think that stress may be compounding over time. For example, someone who reports high perceived stress at age 60 may also have felt high stress at ages 40 and 50, as well." Dr. Edmondson also noted that older individuals tend to have worse CHD risk factors such as hypertension to begin with, and that stress may interact with those risk factors to produce CHD events.

"The next step is to conduct randomized trials to assess whether broad population-based measures to decrease stress are cost-effective. Further research should look at whether the stress that people report is about actual life circumstances (e.g., moving or caregiving), or about stable personality characteristics (e.g., type A vs. B), said Dr. Edmondson.

"We also need to ask why we found this association between stress and CHD, e.g., what biological components or mechanisms are involved, and what is the role of environment or lifestyle (e.g., diet, alcohol and drug use, exercise), and how best to moderate these factors to lower the risk of CHD," said Dr. Richardson.
