Japan factory output falls 1.2% in July

Japan's factory output unexpectedly fell 1.2 per cent in July, the industry ministry says, the latest evidence turmoil overseas is damaging a recovery for the world's third-largest economy.

The decline from a month earlier was worse than a market forecast of 1.8 per cent growth. The government kept in place its assessment that factory production was stuck in a flat trend.

Growing fears about the fiscal situation in Europe - a major market for Japanese products - and a strong yen is hurting demand for products from the nation's factories.

A survey of manufacturers released with the data on Friday morning showed companies expect output to inch up 0.1 per cent in August from the previous month before tumbling 3.3 per cent in September.

Separately, other official data showed consumer prices were down 0.3 per cent on-year in July, the third consecutive month of falling prices, the internal affairs ministry said.

Japan has been in deflation for years, with a series of monetary and fiscal policy moves failing to reverse the trend.

The ministry also reported Japan's unemployment rate was flat at 4.3 per cent in July, in line with market forecasts.

People merge supernatural and scientific beliefs when reasoning with the unknown, study shows

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Reliance on supernatural explanations for major life events, such as death and illness, often increases rather than declines with age, according to a new psychology study from The University of Texas at Austin.

The study, published in the June issue of Child Development, offers new insight into developmental learning.

"As children assimilate cultural concepts into their intuitive belief systems -- from God to atoms to evolution -- they engage in coexistence thinking," said Cristine Legare, assistant professor of psychology and lead author of the study. "When they merge supernatural and scientific explanations, they integrate them in a variety of predictable and universal ways."

Legare and her colleagues reviewed more than 30 studies on how people (ages 5-75) from various countries reason with three major existential questions: the origin of life, illness and death. They also conducted a study with 366 respondents in South Africa, where biomedical and traditional healing practices are both widely available.

As part of the study, Legare presented the respondents with a variety of stories about people who had AIDS. They were then asked to endorse or reject several biological and supernatural explanations for why the characters in the stories contracted the virus.

According to the findings, participants of all age groups agreed with biological explanations for at least one event. Yet supernatural explanations such as witchcraft were also frequently supported among children (ages 5 and up) and universally among adults.

Among the adult participants, only 26 percent believed the illness could be caused by either biology or witchcraft. And 38 percent split biological and scientific explanations into one theory. For example: "Witchcraft, which is mixed with evil spirits, and unprotected sex caused AIDS." However, 57 percent combined both witchcraft and biological explanations. For example: "A witch can put an HIV-infected person in your path."

Legare said the findings contradict the common assumption that supernatural beliefs dissipate with age and knowledge.

"The findings show supernatural explanations for topics of core concern to humans are pervasive across cultures," Legare said. "If anything, in both industrialized and developing countries, supernatural explanations are frequently endorsed more often among adults than younger children."

The results provide evidence that reasoning about supernatural phenomena is a fundamental and enduring aspect of human thinking, Legare said.

"The standard assumption that scientific and religious explanations compete should be re-evaluated in light of substantial psychological evidence," Legare said. "The data, which spans diverse cultural contexts across the lifespan, shows supernatural reasoning is not necessarily replaced with scientific explanations following gains in knowledge, education or technology."

A whisker-inspired approach to tactile sensing

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Inspired by the twitching whiskers of common rats and Etruscan shrews, EU-funded researchers have developed rodent-like robots and an innovative tactile sensor system that could be used to help find people in burning buildings, make vacuum cleaners more efficient and eventually improve keyhole surgery.

Sensor systems that replicate the sense of touch have been the focus of increasing research in recent years, largely for robotics applications. But the focus has normally been on developing sensors that in some way or another replicate the way humans touch and sense the world: with our skin and particularly our fingertips.

'The main reason people explored fingertip-like sensors is because we have fingertips, but any kind of tactile sensor has to interact with objects and surfaces -- and fingertips have a big problem with wear and tear,' explains Tony Prescott, a professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom.

Nature, however, has devised a much more robust, and often much more sensitive, kind of tactile sensing device: whiskers.

'If you look at the natural world, almost all mammals except humans have whiskers -- it's actually us that have lost them. Whiskers are a natural way to sense things with touch,' Prof. Prescott says.

And, it turns out, just like their biological counterparts, artificial whiskers offer some big advantages over other approaches to tactile sensing as Prof. Prescott and a team of researchers from seven countries have proved in the Biotact (1) project. Supported by EUR 5.4 million in research funding from the European Commission, the researchers studied rats and mice, tiny Etruscan shrews and other mammals and attempted to replicate the way they use their whiskers, or 'vibrissae', to sense their environment, detect objects and follow prey.

Their work has led to the development of an active vibrissal tactile sensor array and a series of rat-like robots that can move around by touch alone. The technology could potentially be used commercially for applications as diverse as search and rescue, consumer appliances, product testing or medicine.

'To begin with we had to understand how mammals use their whiskers. Around one third of the project was therefore dedicated to behavioural neuroscience, including filming rats and shrews using high-speed cameras to see how they use their whiskers whilst monitoring patterns of neural activity,' Prof. Prescott, the Biotact project coordinator, explains.

The team then worked out how to replicate natural vibrissal sensing in an artificial system. Their system works by measuring the vibration at the base of the shaft of a whisker caused by it coming into contact with an object or surface. Miniature motors enable individual whiskers or arrays of hundreds of whiskers to be moved and brushed against objects in much the same way that rodents move their whiskers back-and-forth at high speed. Software and powerful processing algorithms analyse the feedback from the whiskers to determine, for example, whether a surface is rough or smooth, if there is a corner or wall, how far away an object is or even if an object is moving.

For rodents, most of which have poor eyesight, active control of the whiskers allows the animal to accurately position the tip of the whiskers as well as control how the whisker moves in order to gain as much information as possible about an object or surface. In this way, they can rely on touch alone to explore and even hunt for food.

Robust robotic rodents for search and rescue

Applied to robotic devices, this same kind of active sensing approach greatly improves the accuracy and effectiveness of the sensors, enabling a robot to delicately feel its way around, rather than clumsily bumping into objects. In addition, while finger-like robotic probes can easily be damaged because the sensing components are directly exposed to the environment, with the Biotact technology the delicate electronic components are at the base of the whisker and do not come into direct contact with objects or surfaces. And artificial whiskers, just like their natural counterparts, continue to function even if they are broken or damaged, and they can be cheaply and easily replaced.

Several generations of sensors and robots developed by the Biotact team prove just how effective the approach can be. Shrewbot, the latest incarnation, looks a little like its namesake and can navigate its way around by touch alone.

'Shrewbot can even follow a moving object simply by using its whiskers. It has no visual sensors or any other type of sensing device,' Prof. Prescott says. 'Because the Biotact artificial whisker is modular, it can be used for a lot of different robots and devices, we've used it with a range of educational robots including the Lego Mindstorms robot, we have also produced a miniaturised version that uses a new kind of polymer-based actuator to move the whiskers.'

'We wanted to ensure that these sensors can be used as universally as possible, so you could go into a store and buy one much like you can buy a webcam today and mount it on any robot or any device,' Prof. Prescott adds. 'At the moment, the price of the technology is still relatively high, but we envisage that coming down over time and we've talked to some manufacturers -- there's definitely interest in this.'

Indeed, the range of applications for the technology is extensive. A Shrewbot-like robot could be used, for example, to help fire-fighters find people in burning buildings or other environments, where smoke, dust or darkness impede visual sensing. An aquatic version, which members of the Biotact team are looking to develop in a planned follow up project, could be used to inspect murky underwater environments.

'Instead of rats and shrews, it would be more like seals and walruses which also use their whiskers underwater,' the project coordinator says. 'Companies involved in nuclear decommissioning have expressed interest in this as they need devices that can inspect nuclear waste ponds, there are also potential applications in the oil-industry and in underwater archaeology.'

In medicine, vibrissal sensors could eventually, after further research, provide highly sensitive tactile feedback to doctors performing keyhole surgery, detecting different kinds of tissues or bone for example. In manufacturing, the sensing technology could be used to test product quality or sort products by analysing the texture of materials. And in vacuum cleaners, the system could automatically detect different surfaces and switch settings to ensure the most effective cleaning, depending on whether a floor is tiled or carpeted.

In a slightly different application of the sensing and actuator technology developed in Biotact, the University of Sheffield is currently working with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to develop a helmet for fire fighters that combines ultrasound sensors for navigation in smoke-filled environments with actuators to provide tactile feedback to the wearer.

Biotact received research funding under the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) as part of the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) sub-programme. The results from Biotact illustrate how this type of long-term, foundational research can lead to research in other areas and use the techniques to solve problems elsewhere.

Calorie Restriction Does Not Affect Survival: Study Of Monkeys Also Suggests Some Health Benefits

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Scientists have found that calorie restriction -- a diet composed of approximately 30 percent fewer calories but with the same nutrients of a standard diet -- does not extend years of life or reduce age-related deaths in a 23-year study of rhesus monkeys. However, calorie restriction did extend certain aspects of health.

The research, conducted by scientists at the National Institute on Aging (NIA) at the National Institutes of Health, is reported in the August 29, 2012 online issue of Nature.

Calorie restriction research has a long history. The first finding came in the 1930s, when investigators observed laboratory rats and mice lived up to 40 percent longer when fed a calorie-restricted diet. Subsequent research has cited calorie restriction as extending lifespan of yeast, worms, flies and some strains of mice. But other studies have not shown a longevity benefit. For example, in studies of certain strains of mice, calorie restriction on average had no effect on lifespan. Some of these mice actually had a shorter lifespan when given a calorie-restricted diet. To date, research does not provide evidence that calorie restriction is an appropriate age regulator in humans, the NIA investigators point out. Currently, limited human studies are under way to test the effectiveness and safety of calorie restriction in people.

The survival results in the study reported Aug. 29 by NIA researchers differ from those published in 2009 by NIA-supported investigators at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Wisconsin study followed two groups of rhesus monkeys for 20 years and found that monkeys on a calorie-restricted diet lived longer than those on a standard diet.

Beyond longevity, the parallel NIA and Wisconsin studies have reported similar beneficial health effects of calorie-restriction. Both studies found that certain age-related diseases -- including diabetes, arthritis, diverticulosis and cardiovascular problems -- occurred at an earlier age in monkeys on the standard diet compared to those on calorie restriction. However, this observation was not statistically significant in the NIA study. NIA researchers did find that monkeys started on calorie restriction at an early age had a statistically significant reduction in cancer incidence.

NIA researchers also found that while calorie restriction had a beneficial effect on several measures of metabolic health and function in monkeys who were started on the special diet regimen during old age (at 16 to 23 years), it did not have the same positive outcome for monkeys started on calorie restriction at a young age (less than 14 years). In the Wisconsin study, all the monkeys were 7 to 14 years when started on calorie restriction.

"These results suggest the complexity of how calorie restriction may work in the body," said NIA Director Richard J. Hodes, M.D. "Calorie restriction's effects likely depend on a variety of factors, including environment, nutritional components and genetics."

Differences in the monkeys' meal and other nutritional factors were cited as possible explanations for NIA's and Wisconsin's different outcomes. Both studies used a similar percentage of calorie restriction with their intervention groups; however, the Wisconsin monkeys in both the calorie restricted and control groups were eating more and weighed more than the matched NIA monkeys.

NIA's food had a natural ingredient base, while Wisconsin opted for a purified diet. Purified diets generally lack trace dietary chemicals and minerals that could affect an animal's health. Each ingredient of a purified diet provides a specific nutrient and minerals or vitamins must be added separately. Natural-ingredient diets have risk of variation between batches, but are considered by some to be more complete than purified diets. NIA and Wisconsin also used different sources for proteins, fat and carbohydrates, as well as different approaches to vitamin and mineral supplementation.

"There is no right or wrong nutritional approach to calorie restriction, but the differences should be considered as we try to understand the dissimilar effects of calorie restriction between the two studies," said first author Julie A. Mattison, Ph.D., facility head of NIA's Nonhuman Primate Studies Unit, part of the Laboratory of Experimental Gerontology.

NIA researchers cited genetics as another possible reason for their differing results. NIA monkeys had a greater genetic diversity, originating from China and India. Wisconsin's monkeys came only from an Indian colony.

"We've learned more by having two concurrent and independent studies of calorie restriction in monkeys than would have been possible by just the NIA or Wisconsin study alone. While the two studies share many of the same findings, the differences will be particularly important for helping us better understand this aging intervention," said Felipe Sierra, Ph.D., director of NIA's Division of Aging Biology.

As scientists measure the possible outcomes of calorie restriction, research is also focusing on finding the mechanisms and pathways by which calorie restriction may influence longevity and the risk of age-associated disease. "My laboratory and other researchers are looking at calorie restriction's effects on cell metabolism, gene expression, insulin signaling pathways and other basic biological processes to pinpoint how reducing calorie intake may attenuate the negative consequences of aging. We are looking at whether compounds can mimic the effects of calorie restriction via these mechanisms," said senior author, Rafael de Cabo, Ph.D., chief of the Mechanisms and Interventions of Aging section of NIA's Laboratory of Experimental Gerontology.

Tropical Storm Isaac closes in on U.S. Gulf Coast

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Isaac bore down on the U.S. Gulf Coast on Tuesday, packing swirling winds and rain and posing a major test of the region's new flood control systems seven years after Hurricane Katrina sent walls of water crashing across its shoreline.

Rain and tropical storm force winds were expected to spread into the region in the coming hours, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said, as computer forecast models increasingly showed the storm likely to make landfall late on Tuesday near southeastern Louisiana as a full-blown hurricane.

Isaac appeared to be taking direct aim at New Orleans, which would be a cruel blow for a city still struggling to recover from Hurricane Katrina which swept across the city almost exactly 7 years ago on August 29, 2005, killing more than 1,800 people and causing billions of dollars of damage.

Authorities encouraged thousands of residents in low-lying areas to evacuate, warning the storm could flood towns and cities in at least three U.S. Gulf Coast states with a storm surge of up to 12 feet.

Isaac also threatened heavy rainfall, with possibly as much as 18 inches (46 cms) in areas, potentially triggering flooding in some coastal areas.

The storm was forecast to strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane, the lowest on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane intensity, with top winds of 90 miles per hour. While that would be well below the intensity of Katrina, a powerful Category 3 storm, the vast size of Isaac's slow-moving system has forecasters predicting widespread flooding.

"Even if it is a tropical storm at landfall, the large size of it will still generate significant storm surge," Hurricane Center Director Rick Knabb told reporters. "That is life-threatening potentially."

Residents in coastal communities from Louisiana to Mississippi stocked up on food and water and tried to secure their homes, cars and boats.

In New Orleans, a bumper-to-bumper stream of vehicles left the city on a highway toward Baton Rouge in search of higher ground. Others prepared, or were forced, to ride the storm out.

"Our flights were canceled so we're going to be here," said Karen Foley, a 23-year-old tourist who had planned to travel home to New Jersey with a friend. "We are just hoping the city doesn't get hit again. It doesn't deserve it," she said.

Along Canal Street in New Orleans' historic French Quarter, crews were boarding up the windows of some stores and businesses.

"I'm not all that concerned about the storm. It's still a Category 1," said Charles Neeley, a 69-year-old contractor overseeing workers covering the windows of a CVS drugstore.

"We usually ride out ones and twos, and get the hell out for threes and fours."

Nonetheless, Neeley said he'd taken care to stock up on food and water at home and fuel his generator.

Isaac was centered 145 miles southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River early Tuesday with top sustained winds of 70 miles per hour - a speed that places the storm very near hurricane status - and swirling northwest at 12 mph.

The storm was more than 400 miles wide and Craig Fugate, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said the worst effects may well be in Mississippi and Alabama.

TESTING THE LEVEES

After Katrina, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built a $14.5 billion defense flood system of walls, floodgates, levees and pumps designed to protect the city against a massive tidal surge like the one that swamped New Orleans in Katrina's wake seven years ago.

Lt. Gen. Russel Honore, who led post-Katrina recovery efforts, said the levees and the level of local government preparedness are "a different story" from 2007.

"But on any given day Mother Nature can beat us," he told CNN, warning the storm could be potent. Isaac has "the capacity to turn the lights out in New Orleans," he said.

In low-lying Plaquemines Parish, which could be the first to be lashed by Isaac's winds and storm surge, workers scrambled to stack sandbags and reinforce levees as Isaac lurked in the Gulf.

Much of the parish lies outside the greater New Orleans levee system, and construction projects to bolster protection are not yet complete.

"We're really worried about the storm surge. We really need a few more years before we see an event like this," said Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser.

Energy companies evacuated offshore oil rigs and shut down U.S. Gulf Coast refineries as the storm threatened to batter the country's oil refining belt.

Oil firms ferried workers in helicopters from oil platforms hundreds of miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico.

As a precaution, as of Monday afternoon, the energy industry had shut down 78 percent of Gulf of Mexico crude production and 48 percent of its natural gas production, government figures showed.

Despite the threat to the U.S. offshore oil patch, which produces about 23 percent of the country's oil output and 7 percent of its natural gas, prices for international benchmark Brent crude traded down $1.24 to $112.35 a barrel in late Monday activity.

Once ashore, the storm could wreak havoc on low-lying fuel refineries along the Gulf Coast that account for about 40 percent of U.S. refining capacity.

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal said President Barack Obama approved his state's request for a federal disaster declaration, on Monday. Obama's approval, given in a phone call that included the governors of Mississippi and Alabama, makes federal funds available for disaster recovery activities like clearing debris.

The ports of Mobile and New Orleans were closed and barge traffic was suspended along southern portions of the Mississippi River.

Isaac killed at least 22 people and caused significant flooding and damage in Haiti and the Dominican Republic before skirting the southern tip of Florida on Sunday.

All eyes on Isaac as GOP convention approaches

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Mitt Romney's Republican National Convention sputters to life with the lonely banging of a gavel in a mostly empty hall, hardly the opening splash intended for the nation.

With a sprawling and strengthening storm bearing down on the region, the GOP hastily rewrote the convention script in Tampa, Fla., to present the extravaganza's prime rituals and headline speakers later in the week ? Tropical Storm Isaac willing.

Nothing is certain as the storm carves an unpredictable path toward the Gulf of Mexico, forcing planners to compress four days of events into three and otherwise improvise.

It's a complication, at best, for a party determined to cast the close election as a referendum on President Barack Obama's economic stewardship and Romney as the best hope for jobs and prosperity.

Best Buy-out: Wait 'til 2013? - The Term Sheet: Fortune's deals blog ...

FORTUNE -- Best Buy founder and former CEO Dick Schulze now has an opportunity to buy the troubled electronics retailer. But it's still going to be very difficult to do so in 2012.

Minneapolis-based Best Buy (BBY) this morning announced that it has agreed to let Schulze see the company's books, and to put together an investor group (something otherwise prohibited by Minnesota law). This comes after weeks of back-and-forth negotiations, much of which has taken place via press release.

The problem, however, is that Schulze still has just 60 days to present a fully-financed deal to Best Buy once he begins due diligence. He should be able to get private equity sponsors on board by then -- including co-investments -- but the banks could be a tougher sell. ?Remember, we're probably talking about $5 billion to $6 billion in debt here, and sources tell me that lenders are likely to want at least some earlier holiday sales data before committing.

Sixty days, however, won't even bring Schulze to Halloween (not exactly the holiday my sources were talking about). He may be entitled to a 30-day extension, meaning that his offer would have to be submitted on Friday, November 23. Perhaps he can get access the first few hours of Black Friday figures to the bankers, and send in his offer at 5pm.

Again, it's possible that Schulze pulls the financing together in time. But the likelihood is low.

By the way, do not think this timing is coincidental. Best Buy has been very clear about not wanting to negotiate throughout the critical holiday season, fearing that it would distract employees.

So here's my guess as to what happens: Schulze either doesn't submit a qualified offer in 2012, or submits one that includes certain material adverse change (MAC) terms related to holiday sales. Either way, Best Buy's board will probably reject the offer, thus setting the stage for Schulze to submit a revised offer in January 2013 -- possibly bringing it directly to shareholders if unable to receive board approval.

Best Buy stock is up more than 6% today, on news of the Schulze agreement. I hope the new buyers aren't planning to get taken out in 2012.

Poll: Economy Trumps Medicare, Women's Health Issues

As delegates to the Republican National Convention gather in Tampa, a new poll finds GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama neck-and-neck. Romney will use the week to introduce himself to American voters, but news outlets warn against expecting much substantive policy to emerge from the speeches.

The Washington Post: Poll: Obama, Romney Neck-And-Neck Ahead Of Party Conventions
The Republican National Convention opens this week with President Obama and presumptive nominee Mitt Romney running evenly, with voters more focused on Obama?s handling of the nation?s flagging economy than on some issues dominating the political debate in recent weeks. ? Fewer voters place great significance on other issues that have roiled the campaign, including newly minted GOP vice presidential candidate?s plan to restructure Medicare, differences between the parties on women?s issues and Romney?s handling of his tax returns. The proposed Medicare changes included in Ryan?s budget proposal in the House have been a focus of sharp debate since he was picked by Romney two weeks ago, and the specific changes to the health-care program are viewed negatively by about two to one (Balz and Cohen, 8/27).

The Wall Street Journal: New Policy Details Unlikely To Come At The Convention
And while policy debates have flared briefly, including over Medicare, the Romney campaign has decided, at least for the moment, not to divulge fresh details of its economic platform, campaign officials said. They believe there isn?t public demand for specifics and worry new information could be used as a weapon by the Obama campaign, people close to the process said (Paletta and McKinnon, 8/26).

Politico Pro: A Health Care Guide To The RNC
This week?s Republican National Convention is Mitt Romney?s chance to introduce himself to the voters who are just checking into the presidential race for the first time. That means we?ll be hearing a lot about his plans to repeal President Barack Obama?s health reform law ? in case anyone hasn?t gotten the message by now. But we?ll also be looking for clues about what more he has in store for health policy if he and Paul Ryan are elected in November. They?ll have to decide how much more to say about his Medicare plan and what would come after a repeal of the health care law. And how will they talk about their opposition to abortion ? and keep the party?s social conservatives happy ? without igniting the Todd Akin controversy all over again (Haberkorn, 8/27)?

Politico: GOP Platform: Cut Health Costs, Lose Weight
The draft Republican platform that was accidentally posted on the Republican National Committee website Friday ? before POLITICO discovered it and the RNC took it down ? suggests that people should do their part to hold down health care costs by avoiding unhealthy habits and lifestyles, which lead to expensive health care needs (Nather, 8/24).

On the ground in Florida, a dust-up ?

Los Angeles Times: Dust-Up In Tampa As Ex-GOP Governor Backs Obama
In his Sunday op-ed, [former Gov. Charlie] Crist hit favorite Democratic Party talking points on Obama and took shots at the Republican ticket, most notably on Medicare, a top issue in a battleground state with a huge elderly population. Obama?s opponents, Crist wrote, ?would end the Medicare guarantee by creating a voucher that would raise seniors? costs by thousands of dollars and bankrupt the program? (Finnegan, 8/26).

Murdoch supports Prince Harry over nude photos

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch came to the defence of Britain's Prince Harry on Sunday, urging critics to "give him a break" over photographs of him frolicking naked in a Las Vegas hotel suite.

Australian-born Murdoch posted a message of support on his Twitter page after The Sun, his top-selling British tabloid, printed the images of 27-year-old Harry in defiance of orders from the royal family.

"Prince Harry. Give him a break," wrote Murdoch, 81. "He may be on the public payroll one way or another, but the public loves him, even to enjoy Las Vegas."

The images of the third in line to the throne, cavorting nude with a mystery woman during a game of "strip billiards", first surfaced Wednesday on the US gossip website TMZ before going viral on the Internet.

The Sun initially respected the royal family's request that British newspapers did not print the grainy camera-phone images, but broke ranks on Friday, claiming it did so in defence of press freedom.

The newspaper said it was "ludicrous" that the British press were not allowed to print images that had already been seen by hundreds of millions of people on the Internet.

Britain's media watchdog, the Press Complaints Commission, has received more than 850 complaints about The Sun's publication of the photos.

A YouGov poll published in The Sunday Times newspaper found that some 68 percent of Britons thought Harry's behaviour was acceptable for a young single man on a private holiday.

Some 75 percent still had a positive view of Harry, an army officer who has served in Afghanistan and is now a trained Apache helicopter pilot.

And 61 percent thought The Sun was wrong to print the images, with only 25 percent supporting the tabloid's decision.

Britain's culture minister Jeremy Hunt -- who faced calls to resign in April over his closeness to Murdoch executives -- said he did not accept The Sun's justification for publishing the photos.

"Personally I cannot see what the public interest was in publishing those," Hunt told BBC television.

"But we have a free press and I don't think it is right for politicians to tell newspaper editors what they can and cannot publish."

Scientists investigating artificial intelligencebased traffic control, so we can only blame the jams on ourselves

Ever found yourself stuck at the lights convinced that whatever is controlling these things is just trying to test your patience, and that you could do a better job? Well, turns out you might -- at least partly -- be right. Researchers at the University of Southampton have just revealed that they are investigating the use of artificial intelligence-based traffic lights, with the hope that it could be used in next-generation road signals. The research uses video games and simulations to asses different traffic control systems, and apparently us humans do a pretty good job. The team at Southampton hope that they will be to emulate this human-like approach with new "machine learning" software. With cars already being tested out with WiFi, mobile connectivity and GPS on board for accident prevention, a system such as this could certainly have a lot of data to tap into. There's no indication as to when we might see a real world trial, but at least we're reminded, for once, that as a race we're not quite able to be replaced by robotic overlords entirely.

The craft of Stone Brewing Co. [Book Review] | Queen City Drinks

Part of the Stone media pack I received was the book? The Craft of Stone Brewing Co.: Liquid Lore, ?Epic?Recipes, and unbiased arrogance.?The book is broken down into sections and I?ll follow that breakdown for my review.

The Nature of Beer

  • Excellent break down of what beer is. They go into detail about the core ingredients of beer and what difference they make. Of interest to home brewers and beer nerds is a breakdown of many styles of hops with name, alpha acid level, and flavor profile. They do the same thing with malt and even various chemicals in water! This is a resource I?ll hold onto for a while and I?ll use it as a basis for an eventual blog post(s) on this subject.

Beer Through The Ages

  • Re-read this section because it was that good. OK, so I wrote that note to myself while doing an initial draft of this post. Then I decided to keep it there because it?s true and everyone should do it. This is by far my favorite section of this book and is full of great info. There is a 4,000 year old recipe for beer which includes brewing instructions called ?the Hymn to Ninkasi? from what is now Iraq, no word if anyone has recreated it recently (get on that Dogfish Head!). That kinda fact just blows my mind. From there they skip ahead a few thousand years and mainly focus on the results of ending prohibition. That is to say the crushing of small brewers and the following slow rise of craft beer ending in the world we have today.

A Story Called Stone

  • This section is really for hard core Stone fans. It goes through the history, founding, problems, and fortune and fame of the company. There isn?t a lot of great info for people looking to start small breweries or small breweries looking to grow. It?s still a fun story and an interesting ride. Plus like the book as a whole it?s told in a very engaging way.

The Beers of Stone Brewing Co.

  • This is a huge section with detailed info and stories on all of the Stone beers. At least all of them as of 2011, which is a lot! This includes all the?anniversary?and collaboration beers as well as the regular round up. Again it?s really for Stone super fans, but it?s also an excellent resource for anyone interested in Stone beers? like a blogger who is in the midst of writing posts about the beers.

Dr. Bill?s Beer How-Tos

  • This is a rather quick section that talks about serving, cellaring, and pairing beer. For the serving section it focuses on choosing the correct glass and getting a good pour. Then a very cursory discussion on enjoying and tasting. The cellaring section just goes through what kind of styles are best to age and good places to store the beer. Pairing is just what you think, talks about why beer works great with food and what foods work with what beers. The how-to section is overall alright but I?d prefer the tasting section to be a bit more in depth. Also in aging it?d be nice if they said age X style for Y years to achieve optimal results. I realize this is very difficult for anyone to say, but still they could give it a shot.

Recipes from the Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens

  • As I?ve stated many times I?m no foodie and I?m a horrible cook. As such this section was lost on me. There are about 15 or 20 recipes for food served at Stone?s brewpub. They look tasty but are pretty complex, at least from my perspective.

Home brew Recipes

  • The first portion here is a nice overview of the entire home brew process. I wouldn?t use this as my only guide for my first brew but it gives you a decent idea of what you?re looking at and could be a good starting place. Following that is beer recipes for a somewhat odd collection of Stone beers. Pale ale, smoked porter, and levitation make sense then there are a scattering of?anniversary?s?and collaborations. But no arrogant bastard which I think may?disappoint?many people. Though as most home brewers already know that?s just a Google search away.

In the end this is a good general beer book and a fantastic book about Stone. If you know any Stone fanatics this would make a great present for them. If you?ve been reading my reviews you?ve seen that I?m no Stone super fan so the Stone-centric portions of this book only held mild interest for me. Despite that I thoroughly enjoyed the general info like the nature and history of beer. Regardless of all that it?s not a huge book so you can pop through it pretty quick unless you want to memorize all the recipes by heart or something.

SKorean court ends law requiring real names online

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? A South Korean court ended a law requiring Internet contributors to use their real names to leave comments, ruling unanimously Thursday that the policy undermined free speech.

The online naming law took effect in 2007 under a bipartisan push to curb libeling, the spread of false rumors and abusive comments in the cyber space. South Korea saw a flurry of celebrity suicides allegedly motivated by malicious online comments, which mobilized the move to control the Internet space.

The eight judges at the Constitutional Court said the real name policy discouraged people from voicing dissents out of concern they would be punished.

"Expressions under anonymity or pseudonym allow (people) to voice criticism on majority opinion without giving into external pressure," the court said. "Even if there is a side effect to online anonymity, it should be strongly protected for its constitutional value."

The court also said it found no proof that the law helped decrease libel or the spread of rumors and false information.

Under the real-name policy, nearly 150 websites with over 100,000 daily visitors, often very popular destinations for South Koreans, required submission of identity information to leave comments.

The regulation also prompted South Koreans, including popular online pundits and critics of government policies, to find an anonymous refuge in overseas services such as Google and Twitter. Some argued the law discriminated against domestic Internet services.

Observers said a series of security breach that leaked millions of personal data from those websites that adopted real-name policy also factored in the decision.

Others said the ruling, while it is a significant step toward fostering freedom of speech, addresses a small part of broader regulations that are still tightly controlling the Internet space in one of the world's most wired countries.

Even though South Korea has a vibrant democracy and Asia's fourth-largest economy, a batch of laws that regulate the Internet are still in place, critics say.

"Real name policies are still intact in many other places. Teens and their parents should verify their names to play online games and during election campaign periods, no anonymous comments are allowed," at websites of media companies, said Jinbo Net activist Chang Yeo-kyung.

Until recently, South Koreans could be criminally punished for leaving false information online. Before 2012, South Koreans were not allowed to disclose in the cyber space their support or opposition of a political party or a candidate. These bills were ruled unconstitutional in 2010 and in 2011.
