Russian-Mongolian military drill over in Buryatia: Voice of Russia

Russian and Mongolian special task forces were focused on joint counter-terrorism measures, blocking and destroying imaginary illegal armed groups trying to break through the Russian border into Mongolia.

The two countries? servicemen for the first time employed attack aircraft during the drills. They also honed the tactic of evacuating civilians from a militant-infested area.

Healthy Optimism and A Positive Attitude - The Self Improvement Blog

flyingBy Dr. Robert Henry Schwenk -

Healthy Optimism Will Get You Far

If you want to fly unaided, using only your hands and arms, no amount of positive thinking will allow you to do that flying. As a matter of fact, of course, if you stand on the top corner of a high building and spread your arms and hands and expect to fly when you jump off that building you will kill yourself.

On the other hand, healthy optimism will get you farther down the road of life than pessimism. Health and wealth are just two of the possibilities that may come your way when you hold a consistently positive attitude.

Studies have shown that people who are consistently affirmative in their attitude toward everything and everybody enjoy better health than those who do not. A whole craze has grown up around casting positive vibrations upon the Universe, expecting positive return on thoughts and feelings from the Universe.

Neither Too Hot Nor Too Cold

Healthy optimism, in my opinion, is somewhere between fatalistic pessimism and irresponsible optimism, sometimes called Pollyanna-ism. Fatalistic pessimism might be defined as believing that everything, all the time, will turn out poorly or badly. Irresponsible optimism might be defined as the attitude that everything all the time will turn out well or good. That one can fly unaided would be irresponsible optimism; that one can never fly in any way might be fatalistic pessimism.

Healthy optimism has got to be somewhere in between.

You Can Fly

Of course, you can fly ? in a plane or a giant kite or in the newer para-suits where you look like a flying squirrel. The person who set out to learn to fly, by holding a positive attitude, kept working and inventing until human flight become possible. Enter the Wright brothers and their flying machine.

So positive thought long held will produce results. Those results can be, literally, in any walk of life, through any occupation or avocation. Your life can be improved through healthy optimism.

How Do I Get One?

Simply said, you develop a positive attitude by developing a positive attitude. Yes, I know the former sentence sounds redundant. But is it really redundant? If your attitude is negative at this time, you?ve got to turn things around by turning your mental posture in a different direction.

You?ve got to see the virtuous and benevolent in everything and everybody. Yes, I know that is not easy in every case. Sometimes it is downright difficult when it comes to some people or some disasters.

Your atrocious boss may try to browbeat you into submission with his impossible demands and deadlines. The tornado that destroyed your home and took all your possessions is not easy to see as presenting opportunities to find the good in it.

A Foundation Is Necessary

To develop and keep healthy optimism you need a foundation upon which to build. You need a place where you may position your confidence that things will turn out, if not for the best, than better than first might meet the eye.

You find such a foundation in the meaning of life, which, I believe, is to be happy. You find that happiness by developing a genuine relationship with The All There Is. You develop that relationship by being in constant touch with The All There Is through such activities as the many forms of meditation.

In that relationship you will find total and complete acceptance from The All There Is. In that absolute acceptance you will find happiness that weathers every and all conditions. There is no greater feeling of well-being than to be perfectly accepted just as you are right now. A supreme feeling of well-being is happiness. Said another way, happiness is a feeling of constant well-being.

Develop That Base

Use one of the forms of meditation and begin today to develop healthy optimism that your life be positive. You can turn your life around in this moment by deciding you will develop the foundation and the relationship that leads to the ability to maintain positivity.

Get to it.

I invite you to be Happier In Five Minutes http://www.createspace.com/3724772 and for the Rest of Your Life This book will give a great start on being happy. Buy it now.

Iraq floats plan to get Syrian opponents talking

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari has proposed a two-stage plan to bring both sides of the Syrian conflict together to discuss a political transition.

Zebari said in an interview that he made the proposal at a ministerial meeting Friday of 20 countries mainly opposed to the government of President Bashar Assad of Syria.

The first stage would be to bring together the countries that endorsed a blueprint leading to a political transition that was adopted in Geneva on June 30 to now focus on implementing that blueprint, he said.

Zebari said the second stage would be to invite representatives of the government and the opposition to a conference in a neutral place.

He said that international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi would have to carry the plan forward.

Lost Pets Fill Washington County Animal Shelter

The Washington County Animal Shelter opened just a week ago and is already at capacity, with lost pets filling the kennels.

"I knew that we were going to have quite a few animals coming in because we were new, but I was just surprised at the amount of animals that have come in with collars, well-groomed... I know they're somebody's pet," said Washington County Animal Shelter Director Shonna Harvey.

Harvey said the majority of the dogs and several cats belong to somebody.

"They're just, you know, sad, want to sleep a lot. We like to give them lots of attention and lots of treats but nothing like home," she says.

Many have collars and microchips, but out-of-date information is keeping them away from home.

"They're groomed, they have collars on, some of them have microchips, and the microchip information has not been updated so we're not able to get a hold of them... If it transfers ownership or if you move you just need to contact the company where the chip is from and just update that information through them," explains Harvey.

New identification tags are also important.

"I would say at least every six months just go have a new one made... If the animal has identification on, we're going to hold that animal for 10 days and do our best to try to find that owner," she says.

So Harvey wants to spread the word, and reunite owners with their faithful companions.

"We know that these are somebody's pets and we just want them to be able to come pick up their pets," says Harvey.

The shelter is currently working on creating a Facebook page so they can post pictures of lost pets that have been brought to the shelter, but as of now they have volunteers posting flyers.

If you lost your pet, Harvey said you can give the shelter a call or swing by.

Blowing Insulation: An Easy DIY Project With A Huge Payback

blowing cellulose insulation using a power blowerBlowing insulation into an attic space is a remarkably simple home energy retrofit project that can have truly enormous financial and energy saving payback. Insulation is one of the cheapest components of a home, yet has the largest potential for saving money over the course of the life of a building.

In fact, many insulation projects have an energy savings payback of less than a single year. That means that you may see enough savings in energy bills in a single year to pay for the cost of installing new insulation. Every year afterward, that savings is money in your pocket.

Blowing Insulation: Where to Insulate

One of the most common questions I hear from homeowners is regarding what home energy retrofit project will have the most impact for the money.

The easy answer is that, for most buildings, attic insulation is the no-brainer project that nearly every homeowner should undertake (although many buildings could also benefit from plugging air leaks, but more on that another time).

For homes with a cold-roof design, that is, homes with a blanket of insulation on the floor of the attic space, beefing up that insulation can greatly improve both heating and cooling energy loads for the home.

If your insulation in on the underside of the roof, the following insulation upgrade may not be appropriate for your home. Consult an energy auditor to determine the best way? to upgrade the insulation in these homes.

During the heating season, a thick blanket of attic insulation acts like a hat for a home. As we know, heat rises and tends to escape through the top of a home. Insulation slows the loss of heat to the outdoors.

During the summer season, an attic space can become a sweltering sauna. Good attic insulation limits the amount of heat that radiates into the living space of your home.

What Kind of Insulation?

You may find one of more of several different types of insulation in your existing attic space, each having their own strengths and weaknesses.

The most common type of insulation found in many homes is fiberglass batt. This basic method of insulating is inexpensive and easy to install, but is often poorly installed and almost always too thin to effectively insulate a home.

My favorite attic insulation upgrade is blowing insulation over the existing insulating blanket using a power blower. Blown-in insulation products, also called loose-fill, when installed correctly, can fill cracks and gaps in the existing insulation blanket and can cover framing members to further limit thermal transfer between the attic space and the living space of your home.

Loose-fill materials include fiberglass, mineral wool, rock wool, slag wool, or cellulose. The two most common varieties used today in many areas are loose-fill fiberglass and paper cellulose.

For the do-it-yourselfer taking on an insulation upgrade, I really like blown-in cellulose.

Cellulose is truly a green product. The material is locally produced in many areas, contains 80% or more recycled content, and is largely non-toxic.

If you look closely at cellulose insulation, you?ll quickly realize that this stuff is actually finely chopped newspaper and telephone directories. You can often still see the printing on the tiny bits of paper.

Cellulose is treated with a natural non-toxic borate product that makes it fire and mold resistant and very undesirable to insects or rodents.

At an R-value rating of 3.75 per inch, cellulose often has a higher R-value than fiberglass batts and is especially good at filling in areas that are extremely difficult to insulate with other products.

Many insulation suppliers will loan or rent installation blowers to homeowners. The job is very dusty, but not particularly difficult.

Ask your supplier for a quick check-out on the blower you will be using. You will need a helper to load insulation bales into the blower hopper while the other person directs the blower nozzle in the attic.

Blowing Insulation: loading a cellulose insulation blower with a bale of celluloseWhen blowing insulation of any kind, be careful to avoid blocking any eave ventilation openings. You may need to extend existing insulation baffles so that good ventilation can be maintained.

Ventilation helps control moisture in the attic space so you don?t want to impede the existing ventilation openings in any way. If you have insulation on the underside of your roof, you will not have attic ventilation.

The downside of loose-fill cellulose insulation is that paper readily absorbs moisture and is slow to release that moisture. Roof leaks can mean removing and replacing any wet insulation. In areas with extremely high summer humidity levels, such as the southeast US, cellulose may not be a the best choice as the material can absorb a lot of water directly from hot moisture laden air.

Blowing Insulation: How Much Is Enough?

The following US Department of Energy map shows the local insulation zone for your area and the corresponding recommended insulation level for that zone.

Commentary: Don't panic about the fiscal cliff | Economy | GMA ...

Who?s afraid of the fiscal cliff? Even as protests in Spain and Greece revive jitters in the euro zone, global businesses and investors have discovered a new political horror, this time in the US. The fear now in world markets is not so much about November?s election, but about the automatic tax hikes and public spending cuts that Ben Bernanke has dubbed the ?fiscal cliff.? These fiscal changes, which come into force on Dec. 31 unless Congress passes new legislation, will tighten fiscal policy by some 4 percent of GDP, comparable to the austerity programs in Spain, Italy and Britain.

?

Given what fiscal austerity has done to Europe, the worries are understandable, but everyone should calm down. A drastic fiscal tightening is almost inconceivable after the election, because politics, economics and markets interact in Europe and America in opposite ways.

?

Let?s start with economic policy. The warnings from the Federal Reserve to US politicians as the fiscal deadline approaches are all against allowing the legislated tax increases and spending cuts to take effect. Thus the Fed is giving politicians advice that is opposite that of the European Central Bank and the Bank of England.

?

Moreover, the Fed is now putting its money where its mouth is. By warning the US government not to tighten fiscal policy, and simultaneously promising to buy bonds and to keep short-term interest rates at zero until the economy returns to full employment, the Fed is effectively offering to finance whatever deficit the US government chooses to run at almost no cost.

?

In terms of economic philosophy, the Fed is now a clearly Keynesian institution. Bernanke sees unacceptable levels of unemployment and attributes them to an excess of saving over investment by the private sector. He therefore wants the government to keep borrowing until the private sector returns to normal levels of investment and spending ? and promises to finance this borrowing with printed money. This policy is anathema in Europe, especially in Germany ? so much so that EU treaties explicitly make ?monetary financing of government? illegal.

?

The opposing economic philosophies of the Fed and the ECB are reflected in financial market pressures. In Europe, bond markets attack countries that persistently overshoot their fiscal targets or get downgraded by rating agencies, knowing that the ECB will punish such ?profligate? governments. But global investors continue buying US Treasury bonds regardless of how much the Congress borrows, safe in the knowledge that the Fed will keep short-term interest rates at zero and will support bond prices.

?

Because of this newfound Fed support, the ?bond market vigilantes? who used to terrify Jimmy Carter and even Bill Clinton have vanished. And rating agencies that threaten to downgrade the US government?s credit have become a laughingstock. Indeed, when one of these agencies did remove the US triple-A rating last year, the price of Treasury bonds, far from plunging, actually went up.

?

Which brings us to politics. With the Fed warning in the strongest possible terms against any immediate fiscal tightening and with bond markets applying no pressure on the government to reduce its borrowing, why shouldn?t the Congress and president simply postpone for another year all the tax increases and spending cuts due on Dec. 31? Having avoided the fiscal cliff, why don?t the politicians then sit down and work on a sensible long-term program of gradual fiscal consolidation starting in 2014, as recommended by Bernanke and almost every other sensible economist? The answer is, of course, political polarization ? and uncompromising partisanship could surely push the US economy over a fiscal cliff. But how likely is an all-out political confrontation between the election and Dec. 31?

?

If Mitt Romney wins, it is inconceivable that a defeated President Obama and lame-duck Congress would blatantly sabotage the economy, defying the Fed?s explicit warnings and a newly elected president?s appeal simply to delay decisions until the new government is in power. In the unlikely event that the Democrats did attempt this affront to democracy, it would have no impact since investors and businesses would know for sure that any tax hikes and excessive spending cuts would be reversed within days of the new president?s inauguration.

?

But what about the more likely scenario that President Obama is re-elected, while Republicans continue to dominate Congress? This might mean more paralysis, but that is not the same as economic suicide. If we extrapolate from the politicians? previous behavior, we would get procrastination until midnight on Dec. 31 and then a vote to postpone any major decisions for 3, 6 or 12 months. Pushing the economy over the fiscal cliff would require much sharper polarization than ever existed before the election. That is extremely unlikely, because the cost-benefit analysis of simply ?kicking the can down the road? for another six months or so will change abruptly after Nov. 6.

?

Before the election, the main cost of postponing decisions was the political embarrassment of failing to exercise leadership and the risk of triggering a rise in interest rates. The main benefit was avoiding immediate damage to the economy.

?

After the election this calculation completely changes. Members of Congress sitting in the lame-duck session before Dec. 31 will be acting democratically by passing responsibility for major fiscal decisions on to their duly elected successors. And the Fed has removed the threat of higher interest rates. The costs of postponement have thus vanished.

?

Meanwhile, the benefits of protecting economic recovery have hugely increased. Before the election Republicans could reassure themselves that any economic damage caused by obstruction would be negated by the benefits of unseating President Obama. But after the election, this motivation will disappear. Instead, both parties will face the inevitable prospect of living together for four more years and will be held responsible by voters and business funders. Neither side will want to start this long period of uncomfortable, but unavoidable, cohabitation, by pushing the economy over a fiscal cliff. ? Reuters

Nike's earnings and China orders fall

(Reuters) - Nike Inc first-quarter earnings were lower than last year and orders in China for the next several months fell for the first time in three years, choking off what had been a growth engine for the world's largest sportswear maker.

Higher costs of materials used in Nike's shoes and T-shirts continue to hurt margins and Nike shares fell 2.3 percent in after-market trading.

Futures orders, or orders of Nike branded shoes and clothes scheduled for delivery from September 2012 through January 2013, rose 6 percent.

In China, futures orders fell 5 percent, after rising 27 percent last year.

Nike is the latest global company to be hit by the economic slowdown in China, which has hurt demand for everything from tractors to trench coats.

Companies like Nike have come to count on China and other emerging markets for rapid growth, compared with mature markets like the United States.

"There is a fear, North America is not a growing market, you need China to work," Rahul Sharma, founder and managing director at retail consultancy Neev Capital, said. However, China is still not Nike's largest market.

He said investors were overreacting to the drop in orders from China which were no surprise.

Nike, which already had some excess inventory there, is finding it difficult to tackle intense competition and frequent promotional sales by local brands, while distributors and retailers are wary of the economy.

The slumping orders overshadowed earnings that beat analysts' expectations.

For the quarter ended August 31, Nike earned $1.23 a share compared to $1.36 a share last year. Analysts on average forecast $1.12 a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Net income was $567 million, compared with $645 million last year in the same quarter.

Revenue rose 10 percent to $6.7 billion, compared with the average analyst estimate of $6.42 billion.

Gross margin fell to 43.5 percent from 44.3 percent a year earlier. The drop in gross margins has eased from recent quarters as higher prices and cost cuts have helped mitigate the impact of rising materials and labor costs.

First tentative Samsung Galaxy Camera UK pricing appears

Android Central

Arguably the most interesting Android device to appear at last month's IFA 2012 show in Berlin was the Samsung Galaxy Camera. As the name suggests, it's an Android 4.1-based 16MP point-and-shoot camera with a bunch of sharing and content creation goodies from Samsung, as well as 3G and 4G connectivity.

Today we have the first tentative UK pricing and release information for the device, courtesy of British online retailer Clove Technology. Clove says it's expecting its first Galaxy Camera stock from late October, and lists the device with a price tag of £400 inc. VAT (£333 ext. VAT, which equates to around $500). That's a lot of cash for a point-and-shoot, and for that kind of money you could be well on your way to a micro four thirds system. It seems Samsung's hoping its added smartphone muscle will convince Brits to part with a few extra pounds this October. Nevertheless, we'd hope for some fairly substantial discounts on the camera towards the holiday season.

We should point out that this is a pre-order price, and as such, it's subject to change (hopefully downwards) as the release date approaches. Let us know what you think of this potential price point for the Galaxy Camera down in the comments -- is it worth the cash to be an early adopter?

Internet Marketing For Small Business: 3 Ways To Increase Revenue

Internet Marketing For Small Business: 3 Ways To Increase Revenue

Internet marketing for small business is becoming more and more in demand. If you own a small business, then you must know that your company can increase revenue by having an internet marketing plan attached to it. Online advertising, if done right, will bring in significantly more sales than traditional advertising. Many people don?t fully understand the concept of how large their business can get using web marketing strategies. A company or individual can increase revenue by 6 or 7 figures a month for using what I am going to show you here. Here are 3 ways to boost your profits using the internet alone.

Search Engine Marketing

This, in my opinion, is the best way to get tons of targeted traffic to your company website. When using internet marketing for small business, advertising on search engines, like Google, Yahoo, and Bing, is key to learn. Just targeting one keyword or keyword phrase the right way, will bring you thousands of people to your business website everyday. (See Example)

Example: Lets say you have a local golf store located in Atlanta and you want to advertise online. You post pictures of your products, and market them on your website. So lets say you want to target the keyword ?best golf clubs in Atlanta.? If you target this keyword phrase right, you will get tons traffic from people living around the North Georgia and Atlanta area. You will also make sales from people who never entered your store. There are many ways to advertise online, this is just one examples of how you can market anything using search engine marketing compared to just using traditional marketing.

There are free methods and paid methods of marketing to the search engines.

Free Methods: This is search engine optimization or SEO. By knowing what keywords to target and how to target them, you can get tons of free automatic traffic of people looking for exactly what you have to offer. Google is the number 1 information site in the world, and the top 3 websites in the world. If you can get on the first 3 pages of Google alone, you have a profitable business.

Other ways to free search traffic: These are free strategies that will bring you more SEM traffic. Article Marketing Video Marketing (YouTube) (Others) Press Releases Social Bookmarking

Paid Methods: There successful paid marketing methods that will bring tons of sales to your company. The first is PPC or ?Pay Per Click? ads. You can Google AdWords and build an account. These are the ads found in the shaded area or to the sides of Google, Yahoo, and Bing. This is the most common method many marketers perform. You have to be careful with this, because if done wrong you will lose the shirt off your back. However, many online adversing companies or self-employed marketers get page one of Google, by only paying pennies for a keyword. This is something I can you can learn in a minute.

Content Advertising is another effective way to market your products or services online. This is where you place ads on websites that have to do with your company or products. You can also do this inside Google AdWords.

Blogging To The Bank

You might be thinking, ?My company already has a blog!? that?s great, but how is it set up, and how much traffic are you getting? Are you using traditional marketing to get a mass amount of people, to your blog, who don?t care, or are you using internet marketing strategies to get target people who care about you and how you can solve their problem? Blogs are powerful, and this can increase revenue for your small business more than you can imagine. It?s not about just having a blog, but about the content as well. This also goes along with free advertising on the search engines. You can learn to optimize your blog and get free traffic. A blog needs to the heart of your web marketing campaign in your small business.

You can also put an opt-in form on your blog. Give away an incentive for people who subscribe to your newsletter. This is important, because you will have these leads forever. They may not buy from you right then, but putting them on your subscribers list is a good way to keep them your mind. Also updating them with coupons keeps will eventually bring new customers from that email list.

Social Networking Sites

If you?re going to use internet marketing for your small business, having a Facebook fan page is important. This will psychologically build relationships with people, much like your blog. Here, you can offer tips and free incentives to people just for being a fan. People go on Facebook at least 3 times a day. Updating messages there will keep them in touch with you. This is also a good way to bring leads. People may not buy your product right away, but getting them to become a fan on face is just like having them on an email list. You can update post on your fan page more than your blog, because people visit Facebook more than blogs.

To get people to your fan page, you can do several things. First you can put social widgets on your blog. When people find your blog from, lets say a search result on Google, you can have a Facebook, twitter, YouTube, and rss icons for people to join you. You can also advertise through Facebook?s paid advertising, and have a link to your fan page. I like the first way better.

These are just 3 of many ways to market your small business using the internet. There is more of a technical side to getting the pieces to fall in place for you. It is the learning curve that is hard to get past, and most people really never get past it. Internet marketing for small business is more in demand. If you are left behind still using traditional marketing strategies, than you are leaving millions on the table.

Rescuers search for climbers after deadly Nepal avalanche

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Nepali rescue helicopters searched on Monday for at least three foreign climbers missing on a Himalayan mountain after a weekend avalanche swept away camps and killed 11 people in the worst such disaster in Nepal in nearly two decades.

Seven French climbers were among the 11 victims of the avalanche that struck their camp on Mount Manaslu, the world's eighth-highest mountain at 8,163 meters (26,781 feet). Two German climbers and one each from Spain and Nepal also died.

"Everything looked destroyed at the site," said Nima Nuru Sherpa, a tour operator who organized the expedition for the French climbers and who helped fly their bodies back to Kathmandu on Monday.

"We couldn't see any tents or any belongings of the climbers," he told Reuters on his return.

The three missing climbers are believed to be two French nationals and a Canadian, Basanta Bahadur Kunwar, deputy superintendent of police, said by telephone from the area.

Five more people who were rescued were flown back from the mountain's base camp to Kathmandu on Monday. Two of them, Italians, walked from the helicopter but they declined to speak to reporters. Six bodies were flown back in a separate helicopter and taken to a hospital.

CLIMBING SEASON

Eight more climbers, who were unhurt, were still at their base camp in the Gorkha district in northwestern Nepal. Some of them might continue their climbs, Kunwar said.

Helicopters ferried five rescued climbers to Kathmandu on Sunday. One of them, a German, died while being treated in hospital, taking the number of Germans killed to two.

Officials said the disaster would be a blow to tourism, which is an important source of revenue for a country recovering from a decade of civil war.

"This is not good for mountaineering. It has made us alert about how to manage the size of the expeditions and avoid casualties," Tourism Ministry official Surendra Sapkota said.

In 1995, at least 42 people were killed in heavy snowfall and avalanches in the Mount Everest region, the last major disaster.

Sapkota said 232 foreign climbers had been granted permission to climb Mount Manaslu in the autumn climbing season that started in September. There are more than 150 guides and support staff with them.

Climbing and trekking are major tourism activities in Nepal, home to eight of the world's 14 highest mountains, including Mount Everest. Tourism accounts for four percent of Nepal's gross domestic product.

Video Transcript

Hi, I?m Scott with Safari Books Online.

If you?re like me, you?re constantly getting up-date notices for your apps. Well, if you?re a Safari Books Online subscriber, and use the Safari to Go app for your iPad, this is one update you?ll want to jump on!

Okay, I promise I won?t keep you long, just long enough to zip through some of the enhancements.

Let?s say you?re in the middle of a book on your desktop, but you?ve got an appointment at the DMV, of all places. You grab your iPad and head out the door.

Even before you get there, all your folders, lists, Smart lists, have been refreshed in the cloud ? Safari To Go, opens up right where you left off. Skip the formality of a home page, and get right back to reading ? ?cause you?re going to be there a while!

Simplicity is the key to good design. See the simple, clean navigation bar on the left? It?s intuitive ? you won?t need to give it a second thought. In fact, I?m never going to mention it again!

Going somewhere without Internet access? You can download 3 books into your Offline Bookbag and read them later at 50,000 feet. Not 1 book, 3 complete books.

And Bookmarks have been reorganized. You?ll find them grouped by book, with the newest right on top.

What?s great here is that after you do a Search, you can save it (see, here it is in Folders), and, let?s say your Search netted 47 results. Come back in a month and that number will have grown. Any new additions to the collection that match will automatically populate when you activate the Search again.

I really want to show you the new Browser, which gives you a LOT more control. First, you can drill down by Category. From there, use the subcategories to refine your search even further. Plus, New and Popular.

Once you pinpoint what you?re looking for:

  • Tap the book, get the overview
  • Start reading 1 of 2 ways; from the beginning, or jump ahead to a specific section

From here, you can :

  • Add it to Favorites, which is also a shortcut to your Offline Bookbag
  • Or, write a review!

Speaking of reading. I saved some of the best for last!

Again, you?ve found your book ? before you dig in; take a few seconds to create a reader experience that?s more to your liking:

  • You can change the size of the type
  • You can change the font itself
  • If you flip your iPad to landscape you can view the text in columns
  • And, of course, there?s the great night reading option

Again, the reader navigation is simple and intuitive

Add the book to your list, or your Offline Bookbag

  • Tap the Table of Contents to jump elsewhere
  • And, when you get interrupted, and your iPad goes to sleep ? Recent will take you back to the spot where you left off ? which is exactly where we started our quick tour!

If you?re not already using the Safari Books Online iPad app, this is an awesome time to download Safari To Go ? for free ? from the Apple App Store.

PepsiCo Launches PepsiCo10 Incubator ... - African Business Review

SAO PAOLO and PURCHASE, N.Y., Sept. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- PepsiCo today announced an open call for young entrepreneurs and forward-thinking university students in Brazil to submit business ideas for its digital incubator program ? PepsiCo10. Now in its third year, PepsiCo10 identifies promising emerging technologies that can be applied to brands to engage consumers in new ways to help drive sales.? PepsiCo10 Brazil will be the first PepsiCo10 program focused on an emerging market.

To view a related infographic, visit: http://multimedia.pepsico.com/public/asset_id/2130

In addition to attracting start-ups, PepsiCo10 Brazil will focus on engaging tech-savvy Millennials by inviting submissions from university students across Brazil. Business sustainability is included among the four submission categories, joining Entertainment, Mobile and Retail -- reinforcing the priorities and interests for PepsiCo's Brazil business.??

Launched in 2010, the inaugural PepsiCo10 US received more than 500 submissions from budding entrepreneurs that gave PepsiCo an early look at technology trends such as social TV, experience-based gaming, crowd-sourced content creation, and pay-at-the-table digital promotion. In 2011 the momentum continued with PepsiCo10 Europe, attracting applicants from start-ups in 18 countries and resulting in marketing pilots with billion-dollar PepsiCo brands like Doritos, Quaker, Walkers and Pepsi MAX.

PepsiCo10 Brazil is kicking off the submission process with a reception and panel at Social Media Week Sao Paolo, which begins today and runs through September 27. From September 2012 to June 2013, the program will select 10 entrepreneurs or university students in two phases to implement marketing programs with leading global and local PepsiCo brands, among them TODDY?, DORITOS?, RUFFLES?, PEPSI?, QUAKER? and H2OH!?, across four categories: Entertainment, Mobile, Retail and Sustainability. Entrepreneurs can apply for the Fall 2012 phase through October 27, 2012 via a tab on PepsiCo Brazil's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/pepsicobrasil. For more information visit PepsiCo10.com.

"Brazil is a great market to run the PepsiCo10 program. Our brands are recognized for their imaginative and surprising programs that reach consumers in unexpected ways, like crowd-sourcing the next product flavor or involving them in a community activity," said Nora Mirazon, Consumer Engagement Officer at PepsiCo Brazil. "PepsiCo10 offers an amazing opportunity to accelerate our innovation process while boosting engagement with consumers in this key market."

Cristiana Gomes, Director of Human Resources at PepsiCo Brazil, added, "Along with the search for new ideas, PepsiCo10 supports our strategy of attracting and retaining top talent by giving us a chance to communicate with some of the brightest and most creative young Brazilian minds."

"We are excited to build the PepsiCo10 roster in Brazil, a growth engine for PepsiCo and a nation brimming with innovative ideas and creativity," said Josh Karpf, Director of Digital Media at PepsiCo. "PepsiCo10 reinforces our commitment to marketing excellence and gives our brands a competitive edge by putting a process behind discovering technologies that enable digital connections with consumers."

How it works:
Start-up companies and students can submit online applications through the PepsiCo Brazil Facebook page at www.facebook.com/pepsicobrasil from September 24, 2012, through October 27, 2012, in one of four categories: Entertainment, Mobile, Retail and Sustainability.? During Phase One of the program ? September to December 2012 ? judges will select five start-ups to activate marketing pilots? followed by another five selections in Phase Two ? January to June 2013. Pilot programs will be conducted with brands TODDY?, DORITOS?, PEPSI?, H2OH!? and GATORADE? in Phase One and TODDYNHO?, QUAKER?, RUFFLES?, PEPSI? and LIPTON? in Phase Two. Proposals are evaluated on a rolling timeline based on a variety of factors, including an applicant's ability to partner with PepsiCo brands and commercial viability. Judges will include executive leadership from PepsiCo, venture capital firm Highland Capital, alongside agency partners iThink, Omnicom and local digital influencers. The PepsiCo10 Brazil winners (up to two travelers per winning submission) will be offered an all-expenses paid trip to New York City in 2013 for the opportunity to meet with PepsiCo brand marketers and network with US-based digital influencers. Partnerships and pilots for Phase One and Phase Two will begin in 2013.

Criteria
PepsiCo is looking for innovative business concepts in emerging technologies from both Brazilian college students and start-ups that meet the following entry requirements:

  • Early-stage: The start-up/ company or idea must be in the marketplace for less than three years as of September 1, 2012.
  • Technology business: The start-up/ company or idea must have a demonstrable business technology or application. No agencies please.

What does zipalign mean and how does it fit into how we use our Android devices?

This mechanism is described at the Android developers site as follows:

zipalign is an archive alignment tool that provides important optimization to Android application (.apk) files. The purpose is to ensure that all uncompressed data starts with a particular alignment relative to the start of the file. Specifically, it causes all uncompressed data within the .apk, such as images or raw files, to be aligned on 4-byte boundaries. This allows all portions to be accessed directly with mmap() even if they contain binary data with alignment restrictions. The benefit is a reduction in the amount of RAM consumed when running the application.

In short: .apk content can be easier/faster/more optimal accessed due to the order of data inside the packed file.

For deeper information, there's a "complete guide" available at AddictiveTips: What Is Zipalign In Android And How To Make Apps Zipaligned, which answers the second part of your question:

Quite understandably, situation would be reserved for unaligned application packages. Resource reading would be slow and memory usage would be on the higher end of the spectrum. It would also depend on how many unaligned applications are present. For example, if less number of applications with an unaligned home application, you?d see slower application launch times. This is the best case scenario. For a worst case scenario, having a number of unaligned applications will result in the system repeatedly starting and killing processes, struggling with lags and huge battery drain.

Historian uncovers rare writings by 18th century political icon

Monday, September 24, 2012

Three political essays by one of the greatest British statesmen of the last 250 years have been discovered by a historian at Queen Mary, University of London.

The new finds constitute the earliest political writings by Edmund Burke (1729-97), dating from around 1757, when he was 27-years-old, a period often described as the 'missing years' of his biography.

Professor Richard Bourke, from the School of History at Queen Mary, came across the early essays among a series of notebooks belonging to William Burke, a close friend and distant relation of parliamentarian, Edmund.

"No new essays by Edmund Burke have been found since the 1930s, so these chance survivals are significant; offering a glimpse of the means by which a gifted orator grew into a respected political sage," says Professor Bourke, who found the collection of works during the course of his research in the Sheffield Archives.

The newly attributed manuscripts are significant as they hint at the philosophical thinking and intellectual themes that influenced Burke's subsequent 30-year parliamentary career. The discovery features in the September 2012 edition of The Historical Journal*

Professor Bourke adds: "It has always been known that in the middle of the 1750s Burke applied himself to the study of philosophy and history as he pursued a literary career in London. It now emerges that he deliberately sought to deepen his understanding of the contemporary political world through the philosophical lens developed by his forefathers from the age of Enlightenment."

An MP for the Whig Party from 1766 to 1794, Burke is a "great and controversial political icon", having enjoyed cult status in both the history of conservatism and the history of liberalism. Unlike almost every other parliamentary speaker from the age of Fox and Pitt, Burke's speeches are still read today, while memorable quotes such as "the age of chivalry is dead" are forever ingrained into English language. One reason for his enduring appeal is that he managed to combine outstanding eloquence with potent political insight. The essays that Bourke identified concern the nature of political parties, the role of citizen armies in the modern states, and the constitutional relationship between Britain and Ireland.

These serious themes were much-debated in British politics in the second half of the 18th century, and formed the political backdrop to Burke's long and illustrious career in the House of Commons.

Iran announces plans to create isolated local internet system, fate of global access unknown

Iranians have been having trouble accessing YouTube, Gmail and other Google services for some time now, but their digital world may be growing even smaller -- Iran announced today that it plans to shuffle citizens onto its own domestic version of the web. Reuters reports that officials plan to connect citizens to the national information network that's currently in use at government agencies. Iran hopes to complete the transition by March of next year, and is already taking steps to isolate its population from certain international services. "Google and Gmail will be filtered throughout the country until further notice," an Iranian official added, noting that the ban would commence in "a few hours."

Some locals, such as the Iranian Students' News Agency, are attributing the ban to recent protests sparked by a trailer for an anti-Islamic film on YouTube called Innocence of Muslims, but the government has made no official comment on the reason behind the ban. The state isn't clear on the fate of the global internet in Iran, either -- although it has talked about creating an isolated national network before. Here's hoping the new network will be a compliment to the Persian web, and not a substitute.
